Dear Parents,
Beginning on October 5th and ending on October 9th, students in grades 3-10 will take the Iowa Standardized Assessment. The Iowa Assessment helps us determine how students are performing on nationwide standards. These assessments measure achievement in several important content areas including Reading, English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
The Iowa Assessment helps teachers identify a student’s strengths and areas for growth. We are able to measure student progress in the content areas assessed from year to year and provide information about college readiness for high school students. The assessment also produces information that enables us as a school to evaluate curriculum and instruction.
We, as a school and as a diocese, use the data provided to review our strengths and weaknesses in order to re-evaluate what we are currently doing. We will highlight the results in a future Beat. Please make sure that your student is well rested and fed a hearty breakfast in preparation for these tests!
Go Grems!

In the Catholic Church, it is customary to place institutions under the patronage of a Saint or some aspect of our faith, i.e., St. Francis of Assisi Parish, the University of Notre Dame, St. Mary Hospital. Our parish’s patron is St. Vincent DePaul. I recently learned that when the three communities of Sacred Heart Parish, St. Patrick Parish, and the Mission of St. John came together as one parish, the name St. Vincent DePaul was chosen because that was the name of the first Catholic church in Sedalia.
September 27 is the Memorial of St. Vincent DePaul, the date on the Universal Church calendar set aside to honor, ask for the intercession of, and celebrate the Mass of St. Vincent DePaul. Since this is our patronal feast, it has been our custom to celebrate the feast on the Sunday closest to September 27, a practice that is encouraged by the Church. This year, the 27 th falls on a Sunday, so we will celebrate on the actual feast day.
St. Vincent DePaul grew up on a small farm in Gascony, France. He was ordained a priest and while serving as a priest, became especially attentive to the needs of the poor tenant farmers he served. A wealthy patron supported a group of missionary priests, now known as the Congregation of the Missions or the Vincentians, committed to serving the poor. St. Vincent eventually became their leader. He later established confraternities of charity for the spiritual and physical relief of the poor and sick members of the French parishes. Today, there are St. Vincent DePaul Societies in parishes throughout the world.
St. Vincent was committed to serving the poor throughout the remainder of his life, forming a number of organizations and institutions to care for the poor. He also contributed greatly to the formation of priests and the establishment of seminaries. (During my four years of Theological Studies and Formation on the way to Priesthood, the seminary I attended, Kenrick School of Theology in St. Louis, was administered by Vincentian priests; the Administration has since been transferred to the Archdiocese of St. Louis.)
In addition to his dedication to the poor and the formation of clergy, St. Vincent DePaul also underwent an impressive character development in his life – he was by nature prone to anger, but became a caring and compassionate person.
A parish looks to its patron to help shape and inspire its identity and manner of serving the Gospel. May we be especially attentive to those in need among and around us, committed to the faith formation of ourselves and our parish, persistent in praying for priests, seminarians, and all vocations, and compassionate and caring in our interactions with one another and others.

Dear Sacred Heart Family,
This Thursday, September 24, is a very special day for our Church in the United States. Today, we celebrate the Beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, here in St. Louis, Missouri.
Archbishop Sheen was born on May 8, 1895, and died on December 9, 1979. He was a priest, bishop, theologian, writer, and, above all, a great evangelizer. He was one of the first great Catholic communicators to use the media to proclaim the Gospel. Beginning in 1930, he brought the faith to millions of people through radio with The Catholic Hour, and later, beginning in 1951, through television with his program Life Is Worth Living. One of his well-known quotes reminds us of the importance of putting God at the center of our lives: “The only way to conquer the world is to conquer yourself.”
Behind his great ministry, however, was a deep life of prayer. Archbishop Sheen spent an hour each day in Eucharistic Adoration, and he considered this time with Jesus a fundamental source of strength for his life and his mission of evangelization.
The Beatification is a very important step on the journey toward canonization. The Church has recognized Fulton Sheen’s life of heroic virtue and has also recognized a miracle attributed to his intercession. From today forward, we may call him Blessed Fulton J. Sheen.
The miracle occurred in 2010. A baby named James Fulton Engstrom was born without signs of life. He had no pulse and was not breathing. Doctors attempted to resuscitate him for an extended period of time. After 61 minutes, the child’s heart began beating again, and he eventually recovered and developed normally. The family had asked for the intercession of Archbishop Sheen.
After a thorough medical and theological investigation, the Church recognized this event as a miracle obtained through the intercession of Fulton Sheen. Pope Francis approved the decree concerning the miracle in 2019, opening the way for his beatification.
Today, Fulton Sheen is one step closer to being declared a saint. For canonization, the Church normally requires a second miracle attributed to his intercession after beatification.
May the example of Blessed Fulton Sheen inspire us, as the Sacred Heart family, to be evangelizers as well, using the gifts and means God has given us to bring Jesus Christ to our families, our school, our parish, and our community.
Blessed Fulton J. Sheen, pray for us.
Our students will also be receiving the Armor of God. We want to encourage them to equip themselves each day with the armor of Christ, strengthening their faith through reading Sacred Scripture and prayer.
In addition, each student will receive a prayer letter to take home and share with their family. We invite you to take a moment to pray together as a family and pray with your children.
In Christ.
