The History of the Rosary
The Church dedicates the month of October to Our Lady of the Rosary, honoring Mary and the powerful prayer that bears her name.
A Brief History
The story of the Rosary dates back to 1214 AD, when St. Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, experienced a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She presented him with a Rosary and instructed him to spread devotion to it as a way to deepen prayer and strengthen faith.
St. Dominic began encouraging lay Catholics to gather and pray together, forming the early tradition of community Rosary prayer.
In the early 1400s, Dominic of Prussia expanded the devotion by introducing the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries—each focused on key events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. These mysteries helped believers meditate more deeply on the Gospel.
In 2002, Pope St. John Paul II added the Luminous Mysteries, which reflect on the public ministry of Jesus and the moments in which His divine nature was most clearly revealed. That same year, he declared October 2002–October 2003 as The Year of the Rosary, emphasizing its timeless value for the faithful.
The Fifteen Promises of the Rosary
According to tradition, the Blessed Virgin Mary revealed fifteen promises to St. Dominic and Blessed Alan de la Roche for all who faithfully recite the Rosary:
-
Those who recite the Rosary shall receive special graces.
-
I promise my protection and greatest graces to those devoted to the Rosary.
-
The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against evil, decreasing sin and defeating vice.
-
It will cause virtue and good works to flourish and bring abundant mercy upon souls.
-
The soul that prays the Rosary shall not perish.
-
The faithful will not be overcome by misfortune.
-
True devotees of the Rosary shall not die without the sacraments.
-
Those who pray the Rosary will be filled with the light and grace of God.
-
I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary.
-
Faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in heaven.
-
You shall obtain all that you ask of me through the Rosary.
-
Those who spread devotion to the Rosary will be aided in their needs.
-
Devotees of the Rosary will have the intercession of the entire heavenly court in life and at death.
-
All who pray the Rosary are my beloved children and siblings of my Son, Jesus.
-
Devotion to my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.
A Call to Prayer
As we journey through this Month of the Rosary, let us renew our devotion to Mary by praying the Rosary daily—entrusting ourselves, our families, and our world to her loving care. Through her intercession, may we grow closer to her Son and find peace in His presence.
