Dear Sacred Heart Families,

 

We are pleased to provide a program to students by Rachel’s Challenge, a nationwide program that was created after the Columbine High School shooting in honor of Rachel Scott and the other victims lost on that tragic day.

 

After Rachel’s death, her family discovered that she left behind a legacy of kindness and compassion – through her life, her writings, and the people she had reached out to. One after another, stories emerged about the profound impact of her simple acts of kindness. Her family soon realized that Rachel’s story could help transform the way we relate to each other, and how we feel about ourselves. It provides an antidote: a path to ending school violence, bullying, self-harm and suicide. How? By creating positive connections that improve self-worth and mental health.

 

Rachel’s Challenge brings people together. It helps break down the walls that lead to harassment, isolation, teen suicide and gun violence. Their programs are a catalyst that stimulate connection and hope, invites personal reflection, and ignites change. When people feel that they are not alone, individuals – and communities – are transformed. It is happening every day around the nation in culturally diverse schools who implement Rachel’s Challenge.

 

Rachel’s Challenge works with educators and mental health professionals to ensure that all of their programs are trauma informed and age-appropriate. While the shootings are addressed in the secondary programs, they are not mentioned in the K-4th grade presentation. The emphasis of the program is focused on the kindness and compassion that will inspire cultural change within the school.

Armor of God – 2nd Grade

Sacred Heart School uses the Armor of God program to introduce our students to new forms of prayer and various sacramentals of the Church each year over the course of their time with us, from the 1st grade through the 12th grade.

The Bible

Next Tuesday, November 12th, our second-grade students will receive a Children’s Bible as the next piece of their Armor of God. The image of the “armor of God” comes from St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, and he even lists the Scriptures explicitly as forming part of our armor of God: “Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the devil… And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:10-18).

As Catholics, we profess that “God is the author of Sacred Scripture because he inspired its human authors; he acts in them and by means of them. He thus gives assurance that their writings teach without error his saving truth” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 135).

The Church exhorts all of us to read and pray frequently – even daily – with Sacred Scripture. Anyone who attends Mass daily has the chance to hear the Scriptures proclaimed and explained every day of the year, but the Church also encourages each of us to spend time personally studying and praying with the Scriptures. Although the text of the Bible is widely available online and through various apps, we believe that providing our students with a dignified physical copy of the Bible, in an approved translation, gives them an indispensable tool for spiritual growth as young disciples. As St. Jerome famously wrote in his prologue to the Book of Isaiah, “ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”

Giving Thanks – Faith in Action

Giving thanks is so important in our life of faith. The Church often teaches and reminds us of this when we gather to celebrate the Eucharist. Consider these words from one of the Prefaces used at weekday Masses during Ordinary Time:

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,

always and everywhere to give you thanks,

Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.

For, although you have no need of our praise,

yet our thanksgiving is itself your gift,

since our praises add nothing to your greatness,

but profit us for salvation,

through Christ our Lord.

It is not only right and just, but also our duty and our salvation to give thanks to God for the many blessings that He gives us, and our gratitude is itself another gift that He gives us to profit us for salvation.

During this month of November, we have a couple great opportunities to Be doers of the word and not hearers only (James 1:22), putting our gratitude to God into action by giving back especially to those who have less than we do.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

On Tuesday, November 26, all of our students will attend the 8:30am Mass at Sacred Heart Chapel for Thanksgiving week, at which the Student Council will organize and lead a food drive. Canned goods and other non perishable food items will be collected during Mass, and delivered afterwards to the Open Door Service Center.

Thanksgiving Meals For Those in Need

You will find information below on how to help with the annual St. Vincent de Paul Thanksgiving Dinner for Those in Need. Last year we served over 1000 meals on Thanksgiving day to people in our community. Lots of help is needed to make this event a success, and we encourage our school families to get involved. The final deadline to turn in your APC Discount Card money and any left over cards is Friday, November 15th. If your student still hasn’t brought home their envelope with cards, have them check their backpacks and lockers.

Sign-Up to Help the Booster Club at Gate & Concession Stand Winter Sports

A big thank you to our gate and concession stand volunteers. We couldn’t do it without you!

If you have a student-athlete, sign-up to work at the concession stand or the gate. Each student-athlete is required to work two shifts in the concession stand or gate for Booster Club. A parent is required if the student is under age 14. If a student and parent both work the same shift, then two shifts are covered, and you have met your requirement! Now is a great time for winter and spring athletes to meet their requirements ahead of their seasons!

If the concession stand/gate duty requirement is not met, your FACTS account will be charged $100.

Queridas familias del Sagrado Corazón,

 

Nos complace ofrecer a los estudiantes un programa a través del Desafío de Rachel, un programa nacional que se creó después del tiroteo en Columbine High School en honor a Rachel Scott y las otras víctimas pérdidas en ese trágico día.

 

Después de la muerte de Rachel, su familia descubrió que ella dejó un legado de bondad y compasión, a través de su vida, sus escrituras y las personas a las que se había acercado. Una tras otra, surgieron historias sobre el profundo impacto de sus simples actos de bondad. Su familia pronto se dio cuenta de que la historia de Rachel podría ayudar a transformar la forma en que nos relacionamos entre nosotros y cómo nos sentimos acerca de nosotros mismos. Proporciona un antídoto: un camino para poner fin a la violencia escolar, el acoso escolar, las autolesiones y el suicidio. ¿Cómo? Creando conexiones positivas que mejoren la autoestima y la salud mental.

 

El Desafío de Rachel une a las personas. Ayuda a derribar los muros que conducen al acoso, el aislamiento, el suicidio de adolescentes y la violencia armada. Sus programas son un catalizador que estimula la conexión y la esperanza, invita a la reflexión personal e impulsa el cambio. Armadura de Dios – 2º grado

La Escuela Sagrado Corazón utiliza el programa Armadura de Dios para presentarles a nuestros estudiantes nuevas formas de oración y varios sacramentales de la Iglesia cada año durante el transcurso de su tiempo con nosotros, desde el 1er grado hasta el 12º grado.

 

La Biblia

El próximo martes, 12 de noviembre, nuestros estudiantes de segundo grado recibirán la Biblia para Los Niños como la siguiente pieza de su Armadura de Dios. La imagen de la “armadura de Dios” proviene de la Carta de San Pablo a los Efesios, e incluso enumera explícitamente las escrituras como parte de nuestra armadura de Dios: “Vestíos de la armadura de Dios, para que podáis estar en pie” firmes contra el diablo… Y tomad el yelmo de la salvación y la espada del Espíritu, que es la palabra de Dios” (Efesios 6:10-18).

 

Como Católicos profesamos que “Dios es el autor de la Sagrada Escritura porque inspiró a sus autores humanos; actúa en ellos y por medio de ellos. Da así la seguridad de que sus escritos enseñan sin error su verdad salvadora” (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, n. 135).

 

La Iglesia nos exhorta a todos a leer y orar frecuentemente –incluso diariamente– con la Sagrada Escritura. Cualquiera que asista a Misa diariamente tiene la oportunidad de escuchar las Escrituras proclamadas y explicadas todos los días del año, pero la Iglesia también nos anima a cada uno de nosotros a dedicar tiempo personalmente a estudiar y orar con las Escrituras. Aunque el texto de la Biblia está ampliamente disponible en línea y a través de varias aplicaciones, creemos que brindarles a nuestros estudiantes una copia física digna de la Biblia, en una traducción aprobada, les brinda una herramienta indispensable para el crecimiento espiritual como jóvenes discípulos. Como escribió San Jerónimo en su prólogo al Libro de Isaías, “la ignorancia de las Escrituras es ignorancia de Cristo”.

 

La Gratitud – Fe en Acción

Dar gracias es muy importante en nuestra vida de fe. La Iglesia nos lo enseña y nos lo recuerda a menudo cuando nos reunimos para celebrar la Eucaristía. Consideremos estas palabras de uno de los Prefacios que se usan en las Misas de los días laborables durante el Tiempo Ordinario:

En verdad es justo y necesario,

es nuestro deber y salvación

darte gracias siempre y en todo lugar,

Señor, Padre santo,

Dios todopoderoso y eterno.

Pues, aunque no necesitas

de nuestra alabanza,

es don tuyo que seamos agradecidos;

y aunque nuestras bendiciones no aumentan tu gloria,

nos aprovechan para nuestra salvación.

Por Cristo, Señor nuestro.

No sólo es justo y necesario, sino también nuestro deber y nuestra salvación dar gracias a Dios por los muchos beneficios que nos da, y nuestra gratitud es en sí misma otro don que Él nos da para nuestra salvación.

Durante este mes de noviembre, tenemos un par de grandes oportunidades para Poner en práctica esa palabra y no se limiten a escucharla (Santiago 1,22), poniendo en acción nuestra gratitud a Dios al dar especialmente a aquellos que tienen menos que nosotros.

Campaña de recolección de alimentos de Acción de Gracias

El martes 26 de noviembre, todos nuestros estudiantes asistirán a la Misa de las 8:30am en la Capilla del Sagrado Corazón para la semana de Acción de Gracias, en la que el Consejo Estudiantil organizará y dirigirá una campaña de recolección de alimentos. Se recolectarán alimentos enlatados y otros alimentos no perecederos durante la Misa y se entregarán después al Open Door Service Center.

Comidas de Acción de Gracias para los necesitados

A continuación, encontrará información sobre cómo ayudar con la cena anual de Acción de Gracias de San Vicente de Paúl para los necesitados. El año pasado, servimos más de 1000 comidas el día de Acción de Gracias a personas de nuestra comunidad. Se necesita mucha ayuda para que este evento sea un éxito y alentamos a las familias de nuestra escuela a participar. Se requiere un padre si el estudiante tiene menos de 14 años. Si un estudiante y un padre trabajan en el mismo turno, entonces se cubren dos turnos y usted ha cumplido con su requisito. ¡Ahora es un buen momento para que los atletas de invierno y primavera cumplan con sus requisitos antes de sus temporadas!

Si no se cumple con el requisito de servicio en el puesto de comida/puerta, se le cobrarán $100 a su cuenta FACTS.
