Good Afternoon,

We’ve just wrapped up another year of Iowa Standardized Testing.  A big thank you to all the students who worked incredibly hard this week and to all the parents who ensured their student was ready for this academic challenge.  But most importantly, a sincere thank you goes to Mrs. Tippie, our school Counselor and a ’98 graduate of SH.  Her hard work and organization are always apparent in this important endeavor.

We have a lot going on for the rest of October.  Keep on your radar the upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences scheduled for October 23rd and 24th. Here is the link for the sign- up  – Click HERE. These conferences are a great way for you and your child’s teacher to work together to ensure your student’s academic growth and success.  On Wednesday, October 16th, we will have a paid dress down day benefitting the Devon Grose Scholarship Fund.  Devon was a 2015 graduate who we all lost too soon.  His family has deep roots at SH and they established this scholarship in his memory.  Next Friday, the 18th is the end of the First Quarter.  Finally, the 8th grade class is planning a Jr. High Fall Mixer for October 24th.  This activity promises to provide a wonderful opportunity for the Jr. High Students to mix and mingle!

Armor of God – 1st Grade & 9th Grade

Sacred Heart School uses the Armor of God program to introduce our students to new forms of prayer and various sacramentals of the Church each year over the course of their time with us, from the 1st grade through the 12th grade.

The Crucifix – 1st Grade

Next Tuesday, October 1st, during the 8:30am Mass at Sacred Heart Chapel, our 1st grade students will receive the Crucifix as the first piece of their Armor of God. The Catholic preference for using the crucifix in art and devotion, as opposed to a cross without the body of Jesus, sometimes sets us apart from other non-Catholic Christians. It’s important to remember that the use of the crucifix is not meant in any way to deny the Resurrection of Jesus, or its importance, but rather to remind us always of just how much Jesus loves us: He loves us to the end (John 13:1); He loves us so much that he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross (Philippians 2:8).

Prayer Journal – 9th Grade

Next Thursday, October 17th, during the 8:30am Mass at Sacred Heart Chapel, our 9th graders will receive a prayer journal as the next piece of their Armor of God. The prayer journal is meant to be used as a tool to facilitate their life of prayer. Prayer comes in many shapes or forms, but it is always basically talking to God. Even though God has lots of things to communicate to us, he doesn’t normally talk to us using audible words. Instead, he gives us ideas, inspirations, resolutions, etc., and even speaks to us through our family, friends, classmates, and teachers. Journaling is a good way of keeping track of these things, organizing our thoughts, and finding the words we want to say to God in response.

October – Month of the Holy Rosary

In the Catholic Church, the whole month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary, a beautiful and scriptural prayer dedicated to contemplating the various “Mysteries,” or significant and salvific events, in the life of Jesus, and of His mother Mary.

Living Rosary

At the beginning of this month, our 5th grade class received the Rosary as the next piece of their Armor of God. They will soon be putting to good use what they’ve learned about the Rosary by leading their fellow Sacred Heart students in the Living Rosary. Parents and families are welcome to join us in the McGremlin Gym at 8:15am next Friday morning, October 18th, as the whole school gathers to pray the Rosary, asking Our Lady to intercede for us as we strive to become more faithful disciples of her Son.

Rosary Rally

All our Sacred Heart students and families are also welcome to join us the next day, on Saturday, October 19th, at 12:00pm for our annual St. Vincent de Paul Parish Rosary Rally. We will meet on the sidewalk outside the Parish Center on the east side of Sacred Heart Chapel.

El Señor de los Milagros

Tomorrow, Saturday, October 12th, our parish will celebrate Mass at St. Patrick Chapel at

11:00am in honor of El Señor de los Milagros, “The Lord of Miracles.” The Feast of the El Señor de los Milagros is a patronal feast of many places throughout Latin America, including Michoacán, México. These feast days are an important tradition in many Hispanic cultures, and historically the Masses celebrated for these feasts are normally when youths receive the sacrament of confirmation, and the day is filled with processions, dancing, food, and fellowship. Many of our parishioners carry on these traditions as a way to pass their heritage down to their children and share their culture with the rest of the parish. The celebration this Saturday is open for all to attend.

If you have a student athlete, sign-up to work in the concession stand or the gate. Each student athlete is required to work two shifts in the concession stand or gate for Booster Club. A parent is required if the student is under age 14. If a student and parent both work the same shift, then two shifts are covered, and you have met your requirement! Now is a great time for winter and spring athletes to meet their requirements ahead of their seasons!

Don’t forget we have several retailers ONLY available through the office (i.e. Casey’s, Cenex, Shell, Colton’s, Kehde’s, McD, Menards, Taco Bell, Walgreens, and VISA to name a few). Stop in at the school office on Tuesdays and Thursdays during our volunteer open hours from 9:00am – 11:00am for immediate purchases, or drop your order at the school office or email it to the program coordinator at scrip@gogremlins.com. Our volunteers will fill your order on Tuesdays and Thursdays and let you know when it’s available for pick-up. We will be at Masses this weekend, Sunday, October 13th. Buenas tardes,

 

Acabamos de concluir otro año de pruebas estandarizadas de Iowa.  Un gran agradecimiento a todos los estudiantes que trabajaron duro esta semana y a todos los padres que se aseguraron de que sus estudiantes estuvieran listos para este desafío académico.  Pero lo más importante es que agradecemos sinceramente a la Sra. Tippie, nuestra consejera escolar y graduada de SH en 1998.  Su arduo trabajo y organización siempre son evidentes en este importante esfuerzo.

 

Tenemos muchas cosas que hacer durante el resto de octubre. Esté alerta para las próximas conferencias de padres y maestros programadas para el 23 y 24 de octubre. Estas conferencias son una excelente manera para que usted y el maestro de su hijo trabajen juntos para garantizar el crecimiento y el éxito académico de su hijo.  El miércoles, 16 de octubre tendremos un día de vestimenta informal pagado en beneficio del Fondo de Becas Devon Grose. Devon se graduó en 2015 y lo perdimos demasiado pronto. Su familia tiene profundas raíces en SH y establecieron esta beca en su memoria. El próximo viernes día 18 finaliza el Primer Cuarto. Finalmente, la clase de 8º grado está planeando un Jr. High Mixer de otoño para el 24 de octubre. ¡Esta actividad promete brindar una oportunidad maravillosa para que los estudiantes de secundaria se mezclen y se relacionen!

Armadura de Dios – 1er grado y 9no grado

La Escuela Sagrado Corazón utiliza el programa Armadura de Dios para presentarles a nuestros estudiantes nuevas formas de oración y varios sacramentales de la Iglesia cada año durante el transcurso de su tiempo con nosotros, desde el 1er grado hasta el 12º grado.

El Crucifijo – 1er Grado

El próximo martes 1 de octubre, durante la Misa de las 8:30 am en la Capilla del Sagrado Corazón, nuestros estudiantes de 1er grado recibirán el Crucifijo como la primera pieza de su Armadura de Dios. La preferencia Católica por usar el crucifijo en el arte y la devoción, en lugar de una cruz sin el cuerpo de Jesús, a veces nos diferencia de otros cristianos no Católicos. Es importante recordar que el uso del crucifijo no pretende de ninguna manera negar la Resurrección de Jesús, o su importancia, sino más bien recordarnos siempre cuánto nos ama Jesús: nos ama hasta el fin (Juan 13). :1); Nos ama tanto que se humilló a sí mismo, haciéndose obediente hasta la muerte, y muerte de cruz (Filipenses 2:8).

Diario de oración – 9.° grado

El próximo jueves 17 de octubre, durante la Misa de las 8:30 am en la Capilla del Sagrado Corazón, nuestros estudiantes de noveno grado recibirán un diario de oración como la siguiente pieza de su Armadura de Dios. El diario de oración está destinado a ser utilizado como una herramienta para facilitar su vida de oración. La oración se presenta en muchas formas, pero básicamente siempre es hablar con Dios. Aunque Dios tiene muchas cosas que comunicarnos, normalmente no nos habla usando palabras audibles. En cambio, nos da ideas, inspiraciones, resoluciones, etc., e incluso nos habla a través de nuestra familia, amigos, compañeros de clase y maestros. Llevar un diario es una buena manera de realizar un seguimiento de estas cosas, organizar nuestros pensamientos y encontrar las palabras que queremos decirle a Dios en respuesta.

 

Octubre – Mes del Santo Rosario

En la Iglesia Católica, todo el mes de octubre está dedicado al Santo Rosario, una hermosa oración bíblica dedicada a contemplar los diversos “Misterios”, o eventos significativos y salvíficos, en la vida de Jesús y de su madre María.

Rosario Viviente

A principios de este mes, nuestra clase de 5to grado recibió el Rosario como la siguiente pieza de su Armadura de Dios. Pronto pondrán en práctica lo que han aprendido sobre el Rosario al guiar a sus compañeros de estudios del Sagrado Corazón en el Rosario Viviente. Los padres y las familias pueden unirse a nosotros en el gimnasio McGremlin a las 8:15 a.m. el próximo viernes 18 de octubre por la mañana, mientras toda la escuela se reúne para rezar el Rosario, pidiendo a Nuestra Señora que interceda por nosotros mientras nos esforzamos por convertirnos en discípulos más fieles de su Hijo.

Rally del Rosario

Todos nuestros estudiantes y familias del Sagrado Corazón también son bienvenidos a unirse a nosotros al día siguiente, el sábado 19 de octubre, a las 12:00 p.m. para nuestra reunión anual del Rosario de la Parroquia de San Vicente de Paúl. Nos reuniremos en la acera afuera del Centro Parroquial en el lado este de la Capilla del Sagrado Corazón.

El Señor de los Milagros

Mañana, sábado 12 de octubre, nuestra parroquia celebrará Misa en la Capilla de San Patricio a las 11:00 am en honor al Señor de los Milagros. La Fiesta del Señor de los Milagros es una fiesta patronal de muchos lugares de América Latina, incluido Michoacán, México. Estos días festivos son una tradición importante en muchas culturas hispanas e históricamente las Misas celebradas en estas fiestas normalmente son cuando los jóvenes reciben el sacramento de la confirmación y el día está lleno de procesiones, bailes, comida y compañerismo. Muchos de nuestros feligreses continúan con estas tradiciones como una forma de transmitir su herencia a sus hijos y compartir su cultura con el resto de la parroquia. La celebración de este sábado está abierta para que todos puedan asistir.
