Iowa Standardized Testing Week is almost here. Assessments will be given to grades 3-10 throughout October 7-11. Families may notice that their student is nervous the morning of testing, so starting the morning off as calmly as possible can benefit each child. This may include waking up a little earlier, having lunch prepared the night before, getting plenty of sleep, and offering encouraging and positive comments. Good luck to all students testing next week!
The Iowa Assessments help determine how students are performing on nationwide standards. These assessments measure achievement in several important content areas including Reading, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
The Iowa Assessments help teachers identify a student’s strengths and areas that may need additional emphasis. The Iowa Assessments also measure student growth and progress in the content areas assessed from year to year and provide information about college readiness for older students. The assessments produce information that enables sound decision-making and provides a focus for teachers to evaluate instruction.
We, as a school and as a diocese, use the data provided to review our strengths and weaknesses in order to re-evaluate what we are currently doing. It is important to keep in mind that the Iowa Assessments is a standardized test and although the information provided is helpful, it is just a brief snapshot of our students’ abilities.
It is hard to believe that the first quarter ends on October 18th. Please check FACTS often to keep yourself up-to-date on your students’ grades. Reach out to your student’s teacher if you have questions or concerns. Ms. McMullin and I will sit in on a meeting with your student’s teacher and you, but you must try and resolve any issues one-on-one with the teacher first. Please keep in mind that we are all on the same team and want to do what we can to help your child succeed at Sacred Heart. Digital grade cards will come home on the morning of October 23rd. Parent/teacher conferences will be in the afternoon and evening of October 23rd and the morning and afternoon of October 24th. Look for a signup link coming soon.
We are making great progress in enforcing our appearance code. So many parents have reached out to say “thank you” for the standards we are holding our students to. There seems to be a more professional attitude from many of our students, so we know that things are working in the right direction. Ms. McMullin and I are very grateful for your support in holding our students accountable. Please reference the student handbook or send either one of us a note if you have questions.
Standardized Testing Week

Annual Priests’ Institute
Next week Fr. Joe and I will both be together with all of the priests of the Diocese of Jefferson City for our annual Priests’ Institute. Each year the bishop brings together all of the priests for a week of fraternity and ongoing formation (or what might be called “professional development,” in another context). For many of us, this week will be the most time that we get to spend together as priests during the year, and it’s an important opportunity for us to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood that we share, as well as receive ongoing education and formation to aid in our ministry.
One of the main presentations this year will be from Rhonda Gruenewald, the founder of Vocation Ministry. She works with parishes and dioceses across the country to strengthen local vocations ministries, and we are looking forward to hearing from her and bringing back some of her insights to the diocese and to St. Vincent de Paul Parish.
Please say a prayer for safe travels for our presenters and all of the priests to and from the Institute next week.
Truth, Beauty, and (More) Art
Coming up next week (October 9th), a number of our high school students will be participating in the Kaysinger Art Contest. As I wrote a couple weeks ago in connection with our junior high students participating in the art contest, the Church understands art as a way to express the truth, and a participation in God’s work of creation. Because of this, the Church has always been a patron of the arts. Since God made Himself visible in Jesus Christ, we believe that artistic representation of the mysteries of our faith is not only appropriate, but can even be an aid to our growth in faith and love of God. With that in mind, say a prayer for our students participating in the Kaysinger Art Contests!

APC Win-Win Cards One Week Left for Incentives!!
There is one week left to sell APC Discount Cards and return your envelope with money for the cards sold. All envelopes returned by next Friday, October 11th will be counted towards the Ice Cream Treat Party incentive and the incentives to class treasuries for junior high and high school students. If you still have cards to sell, the final date to return all money and unsold cards is Friday, November 8th.
If you need more cards to sell, please call the school office at 660-827-3800. If you don’t plan to sell your cards, we ask for you to consider making a donation to APC and returning the cards so another student can sell them.

Secondary Grandparents Day – Nov. 8th

Don’t forget we have several retailers ONLY available through the office (i.e. Casey’s, Cenex, Shell, Colton’s, Kehde’s, McD, Menards, Taco Bell, Walgreens, and VISA to name a few). Stop in at the school office on Tuesdays and Thursdays during our volunteer open hours from 9:00am – 11:00am for immediate purchases, or drop your order at the school office or email it to the program coordinator at scrip@gogremlins.com. Our volunteers will fill your order on Tuesdays and Thursdays and let you know when it’s available for pick-up. We will not be at Masses this weekend. La semana de las pruebas estandarizadas de Iowa ya está aquí. Las evaluaciones serán para los grados 3-10 durante el 7-11 de octubre. Las familias pueden notar que sus
estudiantes estén nerviosos la mañana del examen, comenzando la mañana
lo más tranquilo posible realmente puede beneficiar a cada niño. Esto puede incluir

Instituto Anual de Sacerdotes
La próxima semana el Padre Joe y yo estaremos juntos con todos los sacerdotes de la Diócesis de Jefferson City para nuestro Instituto Sacerdotal anual. Cada año, el obispo reúne a todos los sacerdotes durante una semana de fraternidad y formación permanente (o lo que podría llamarse “desarrollo profesional”, en otro contexto). Para muchos de nosotros, esta semana será el mayor tiempo que pasaremos juntos como sacerdotes durante el año, y es una oportunidad importante para fortalecer los lazos de hermandad que compartimos, así como para recibir educación y formación continua para ayuda en nuestro ministerio.
Una de las presentaciones principales de este año será la de Rhonda Gruenewald, fundadora de la Pastoral Vocacional. Trabaja con parroquias y diócesis de todo el país para fortalecer los ministerios de vocaciones locales, y esperamos tener noticias suyas y traer algunas de sus ideas a la diócesis y a la parroquia de San Vicente de Paúl.
Por favor, ore por un viaje seguro para nuestros presentadores y todos los sacerdotes hacia y desde el Instituto la próxima semana.
Verdad, belleza y (más) arte
La próxima semana (9 de octubre), varios de nuestros estudiantes de secundaria participarán en el Concurso de Arte Kaysinger. Como escribí hace un par de semanas en relación con nuestros estudiantes de secundaria que participaron en el concurso de arte, la Iglesia entiende el arte como una forma de expresar la verdad y una participación en la obra de creación de Dios. Por eso, la Iglesia siempre ha sido mecenas de las artes. Dado que Dios se hizo visible en Jesucristo, creemos que la representación artística de los misterios de nuestra fe no sólo es apropiada, sino que incluso puede ser una ayuda para nuestro crecimiento en la fe y el amor de Dios. Con eso en mente, ¡oremos por nuestros estudiantes que participan en los Concursos de Arte de Kaysinger!

Tarjetas APC Win-Win ¡¡Queda una semana para incentivos!!
Queda una semana para vender Tarjetas de Descuento APC y devolver tu sobre con el dinero por las tarjetas vendidas. Todos los sobres devueltos antes del próximo viernes 11 de octubre contarán para el incentivo de la fiesta de helado y los incentivos para las tesorerías de clase para estudiantes de secundaria y preparatoria. Si todavía tienes tarjetas para vender, la fecha final para devolver todo el dinero y las tarjetas no vendidas es el viernes 8 de noviembre.

Quiero que nuestros oficiales sepan lo agradecidos que estamos por ellos, sin ellos no podríamos competir. ¡El amor que tienen por el juego y por brindar oportunidades para competencias escolares no pasa desapercibido! ¡GRACIAS por tu dedicación!
