Hospitality, Hospitality, Hospitality!

A new school year begins for us here at Sacred Heart School in just a few short weeks, and that makes for a great opportunity to talk about hospitality, and welcoming new members into our school and parish community.

Hospitality – The First Pillar of Stewardship

As parish communities across the Diocese of Jefferson City – including St. Vincent de Paul Parish, here in Pettis County – continue to promote the spirituality of stewardship more intentionally, we are working to focus especially on the four pillars of stewardship: hospitality, prayer, formation, and service. Hospitality comes first because we cannot teach people to pray, offer them deeper formation in the Christian faith, and empower them effectively for service if we do not first welcome them into our community.

Hospitality is what makes the parish community more than simply the people who happen to go to the same church or school that we do. Hospitality is what makes our parish and school community a family. Focusing on hospitality means putting the focus on building meaningful relationships within our community, both by welcoming new members and striving to create true friendships within the existing community. Hospitality means being open to new people, new cultures, and new ways of doing things. And for Christians, hospitality means believing that whenever we welcome the least of our brothers and sisters, we welcome Christ Himself.

Hospitality in Action

Soon we will be welcoming new and returning members of the Sacred Heart team to the upcoming Professional Development Days for our faculty and staff. We will be welcoming new and returning families to our school at the Kindergarten Orientation, New Family Mixer, and Open House. And we’ll be welcoming new and returning students on the first day of school!

These are all great opportunities for us to exercise hospitality. The beginning of hospitality is as easy as a smile and a word of welcome, but I want to challenge us all this week to really be intentional about hospitality as we gear up for a new school year. Make a point to introduce yourself to a new faculty member, school family, or parent, but don’t let it stop at the superficial: ask them why they chose to come to Sacred Heart, and share something you love about our school and parish community.

Hospitality isn’t just for new faces, either. A new school year provides a good opportunity to be intentional about developing our friendships with those we already know, whether that be a fellow faculty member or fellow school family. Hospitality can also mean working for reconciliation and healing in existing relationships that have been wounded, opening ourselves to the grace of forgiveness, given and received.

An Invitation to the School of Stewardship

Earlier this year, Mrs. Howell, Mrs. Dillon, and I attended the Msgr. McGread Stewardship Conference in Wichita, KS. One of the things that we heard at the conference that has really stuck with me was that we can honestly call the Bible the “textbook of stewardship,” and the Mass the “school of stewardship.” This is because the spirituality of stewardship is so plainly rooted in Sacred Scripture, and because the Mass is where Jesus most effectively empowers us to make the gift of ourselves to God that lies at the heart of the stewardship way of life.

So I’ll conclude with an invitation and a challenge: come to the school of stewardship! First, if you aren’t already coming to Mass regularly on Sundays, we would love to welcome you at Sacred Heart (once the A/C is running again, or once it cools down), St. Patrick, or St. John. And if you are, come join us for weekday Mass at least once during the month of August, or invite someone to join you for a Sunday or weekday Mass. Hospitality doesn’t have to be complicated – it starts with a simple decision to invite others into our community and into deeper friendship with the Lord.

Dear Sacred Heart Community,

We are so excited to welcome you back for what I am confident will be an extraordinary school year. In my new role as Assistant Principal, I have been fortunate to see all of the preparations that are being made for our students. The maintenance crew has done a remarkable job at shining up our school, our office staff is making sure we have what we need, and many of our teachers are back in the building getting rooms and curriculum ready to go!

As we start the school year, my focus remains on helping our faculty with curriculum and instruction, building safety and security, and reinforcing the high expectations we hold for our students’ behavior. Mrs. Manning and I have put many hours into revising the handbook. Please familiarize yourselves with the changes. The expectations are clear and the consequences will be just and predictable. Please pay special attention to the new phone/electronic device policy. In an effort to keep our students safe spiritually, mentally, physically, and emotionally, we have made some major changes. I will continue to pray for our families, and ask that you keep our faculty, staff, and administration in your prayers as well. It is going to be a great year!

Welcome Our New Faculty for 2024-2025!

We are excited to welcome the following new faculty members to Sacred Heart School!

Ashley Balderrama | JH/HS Science

Hello! I am looking forward to teaching this year and meeting you all! I grew up in Utah with a family of nine people. Both my parents are from South America, so I grew up speaking Spanish. In high school, I was involved in orchestra. At Utah Valley University, I earned a Bachelor’s in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. I’ve worked in a lab studying behavior in mice with traumatic brain injuries at the University of Missouri Hospital. Then I worked 8 months as a Day Support Professional at Impact Support Services. I enjoy learning, building friendships, and serving the community. I am constantly seeking what The Lord is calling me to do and places to serve.

This past semester, I’ve felt that the Lord opened the door to teach at Sacred Heart. I am excited to be teaching science at a Catholic school because I can share about the amazing complexity of God’s creation through the sciences and have the opportunity to invite God into discussion. It is important to me that students grow both spiritually and academically. There is a lot to learn for both the students and me this year, and we can achieve this through hard work and Christ who gives us strength. I will be keeping an eye out for ways that students learn best and other resources to help grow them both academically and spiritually.

Just a little bit about me is that I love worship, trail walks, hiking, and Jesus. I self-taught myself to play piano and guitar so I’m willing to jam with others to worship! Now, it’s time for me to learn about you all, so don’t hesitate to say hello and introduce yourself or share your favorite bible verse. I am looking forward to meeting you all and learning what excites you!

Marcia Ball | HS English

I was born in Milan, MO, as one of 8 siblings who lived on a farm and enjoyed the love of two wonderful parents and many adventures with my siblings. Although we are scattered throughout the country, we are still very close and enjoy gathering every two years to catch up with everyone. I was born and raised a Catholic, so I am looking forward to teaching in a classroom where I can express my love of God and my Catholic faith.

I began my teaching career in Marceline, MO, where I taught English to juniors and seniors. I taught at Marceline for 7 years and moved to teaching English in Brookfield for two years after my divorce. After my annulment and my son’s graduation from high school, I left that part of Missouri and moved to Knob Noster to teach high school English at Knob Noster High School. I taught English for 6 years then moved to the library and became the librarian for 6 years. I retired in 2013, and took a part-time position as Lead Mentor Teacher for the Sedalia 200 School District for the last 11 years. I fully retired in May of this year, but I felt the Lord pulling me to Sacred Heart, where a friend had taken a position and asked me to consider applying for the English position here.

Although I have been out of the English classroom for a few years, I look forward to working with students in a Catholic school. After visiting with Mrs. Manning, I felt God was guiding me to take this position, and I am ready for the challenge of working with inspiring students in a God-centered setting. I am thankful for this opportunity and look forward to working with the staff, teachers, parents, and most of all students at Sacred Heart.

Ilsi Palacios | JH/HS Religion

My name is Ilsi Palacios, I am from El Salvador, but I have lived in Sedalia for the last 14 years. Our family is part of St. Vincent de Paul parish, my husband José and I are the current coordinators for the local Catholic Charismatic Renewal prayer group. We have four children and our two boys, Josué and David will be entering 3rd and 1st grade this year at Sacred Heart.

I am very happy to return to Sacred Heart School after 4 years! I taught Spanish-K-12 from 2010 to 2020 and I will be teaching JR High and High School Religion this coming school year. I discovered teaching as one of my passions very early in my life. When I was in 4th grade, I taught a group of teenage neighbors how to read and write. At that time El Salvador was going through a Civil War, this was a reason why many children didn’t have the opportunity to go to school. That was the case for some of my new neighbors at that time.

I grew up practicing the Catholic faith, but when I was 13, I went to a Life in the Spirit Seminar. This experience brought me closer to God and changed the way I viewed everything. I understood that life is a gift from God, our time, talents and treasure is given by Him. By 18, I deepend in the studies of the Bible, the Saints and started giving and leading retreats in and out of our diocese. Including Mexico and El Salvador in the past year. Devoting entire weekends and nights serving the most wonderful Lord is awesome! As Psalm 33 says, “Taste and see how good is the Lord.” Spending my youth under His lordship is the best thing that happened in my life!

As you can tell by now, teaching about our Catholic faith is also a great passion of mine! Of course, I also cherish spending time with my family, for example, camping at the beautiful Table Rock Lake near Branson. On the sports side, I have become a Chiefs fan. I played soccer during high school and it is the sport that I enjoy the most. I am eager to meet new and returning students, to learn more about them. But above all to help them grow in their relationship with Christ.

During the past two years I have taken faith formation courses with the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute and have received a Catholic Social Teaching certification with the United States Conference of Bishops Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development. My undergraduate and graduate studies are in Psychology, Spanish and English as a Second Language from Pittsburg State University (State of Kansas) I am looking forward to starting a Masters in Applied Theology this Fall.

The start of the 2024-2025 seasons is quickly approaching. Throughout the summer we have many new additions to our coaching staff and I am excited to share this line up with you. The students and coaching staff put in many hours this summer preparing for the upcoming year. I am so proud of all their efforts and am looking forward to a great year! The Fall  first official practice day for High School programs is Monday, August 12th. Junior High is Monday, August 19th. We are pleased to announce one new program being offered for 2024-2025, Archery. This program starts before Christmas break and ends in March. The new program will be coached by Mike Schwartz. There will be some small cost associated with the program for shirts and individual event registrations.

Booster Club Volleyball Concession Stand Sign-ups

If you have a student athlete, it’s not too early to sign-up to work in the concession stand. Each student athlete is required to work two shifts in the concession stand for Booster Club. A parent is required if the student is under age 14. If a student and parent both work the same shift, then two shifts are covered, and you have met your requirement! Now is a great time for winter and spring athletes to meet their requirements ahead of their seasons!

If the concession stand requirement is not met, your FACTS account will be charged $100.

With the school year coming to an end, we will be moving to our summer schedule for filling orders. Un nuevo año escolar comienza para nosotros aquí en la Escuela del Sagrado Corazón en tan solo unas pocas semanas, y eso es una gran oportunidad para hablar sobre la hospitalidad y dar la bienvenida a nuevos miembros a nuestra escuela y comunidad parroquial.

Hospitalidad- El primer pilar de la administración

Daremos la bienvenida a nuestra escuela a las familias nuevas y a las que regresan en la orientación de Kinder, la reunión de nuevas familias y la jornada de puertas abiertas. ¡Y daremos la bienvenida a los estudiantes nuevos y recurrentes el primer día de clases!

Todas estas son grandes oportunidades para ejercer la hospitalidad. El comienzo de la hospitalidad es tan fácil como una sonrisa y una palabra de bienvenida, pero quiero desafiarnos a todos esta semana a que seamos realmente intencionales con respecto a la hospitalidad mientras nos preparamos para un nuevo año escolar. Propóngase presentarse a un nuevo miembro del personal, familia de la escuela o padre, pero no permita que se limite a lo superficial: pregúnteles por qué eligieron venir al Sagrado Corazón y comparta algo que le guste de nuestra escuela y parroquia. comunidad.

La hospitalidad tampoco es sólo para caras nuevas. Un nuevo año escolar brinda una buena oportunidad para desarrollar intencionalmente nuestras amistades con aquellos que ya conocemos, ya sea un miembro de la facultad o un compañero de familia de la escuela. La hospitalidad también puede significar trabajar por la reconciliación y la curación de las relaciones existentes que han sido heridas, abriéndonos a la gracia del perdón, dado y recibido.

Una invitación a la escuela de Buena Administración

A principios de este año, la Sra. Howell, la Sra. Dillon y yo asistimos a la reunión de Mons. Conferencia de Buena Administración McGread en Wichita, KS. Una de las cosas que escuchamos en la conferencia y que realmente me quedó grabado fue que podemos llamar honestamente a la Biblia el “libro de texto de buena administración” y a la Misa la “escuela de la buena administración”. Esto se debe a que la espiritualidad de la corresponsabilidad claramente tiene la raíces en las Sagradas Escrituras, y a que en la Misa es donde Jesús nos capacita más eficazmente para hacer la entrega de nosotros mismos a Dios que se encuentra en el corazón del estilo de vida de la corresponsabilidad.

Así que concluiré con una invitación y un desafío: ¡ven a la escuela de la buena administración! Primero, si aún no vienes a Misa regularmente los domingos, nos encantaría darte la bienvenida al Sagrado Corazón (una vez que el aire acondicionado vuelva a funcionar o una vez que se enfríe), San Patricio o St. John. Y si es así, únase a nosotros para la Misa entre semana al menos una vez durante el mes de agosto, o invite a alguien a unirse a usted para una Misa dominical o entre semana. La hospitalidad no tiene por qué ser complicada: comienza con una simple decisión de invitar. a otros en nuestra comunidad y en una amistad más profunda con el Señor.

Querida Comunidad del Sagrado Corazón,

Estamos muy emocionados de darle la bienvenida nuevamente a lo que estoy seguro será un año escolar extraordinario. En mi nuevo rol como subdirector, he tenido la suerte de ver todos los preparativos que se están haciendo para nuestros estudiantes. El equipo de mantenimiento ha hecho un trabajo extraordinario para hacer brillar nuestra escuela, nuestro personal de oficina se está asegurando de que tengamos lo que necesitamos y muchos de nuestros maestros están de regreso en el edificio preparando los salones y el plan de estudios.

Al comenzar el año escolar, mi enfoque sigue siendo ayudar a nuestro personal docente con el plan de estudios y la instrucción, desarrollar la seguridad y reforzar las altas expectativas que tenemos para el comportamiento de nuestros estudiantes. La señora Manning y yo hemos dedicado muchas horas revisando el manual. Familiarícese con los cambios. Las expectativas son claras y las consecuencias serán justas y predecibles. Ashley Balderrama | Ciencias secundaria/preparatoria

¡Hola! ¡Estoy emocionada de enseñar este año y conocerlos a todos! Crecí en Utah con una familia de nueve personas. Mis padres son de Sudamérica, así que crecí hablando español. En la preparatoria, estuve involucrada en la orquesta. En la Universidad del Valle de Utah, obtuve una licenciatura en Biología y una especialización en Química. Trabajé en un laboratorio que estudiaba el comportamiento de ratones con traumáticas  lesiones cerebrales en el Hospital de la Universidad de Missouri. Luego trabajé 8 meses como apoyo profesional del día en Impact Support Services. Disfruto aprender, construir amistades y servir a la comunidad. Estoy constantemente buscando lo que el Señor me llama a hacer y lugares para servir.

Este semestre pasado sentí que el Señor abrió la puerta para enseñar en el sagrado corazón. Me entusiasma enseñar ciencias en una escuela Católica porque puedo compartir sobre la asombrosa complejidad de la creación de Dios a través de las ciencias y tener la oportunidad de invitar a Dios a la discusión. Para mí es importante que los estudiantes crezcan tanto espiritual como académicamente. Hay mucho que aprender tanto para los estudiantes como para mí este año, y podemos lograrlo a través del trabajar duro y de Cristo que nos da fuerza. Estaré atenta a las formas en que los estudiantes aprenden mejor y otros recursos para ayudarlos a crecer tanto académica como espiritualmente.

Un poco sobre mí es que amo la adoración, los senderos, las caminatas y Jesús. ¡Aprendí por mi cuenta a tocar el piano y la guitarra, así que estoy dispuesta a tocar con otros para adorar! Ahora es tiempo de que conozca más sobre todos ustedes, así que no duden en saludar y presentarse o compartir su versículo bíblico favorito. ¡Estoy emocionada en conocerlos a todos y aprender lo que les apasiona!

Marcia Bola | Inglés de preparatoria

Nací en Milan, MO, como una de 8 hermanos que vivían en una granja y disfrutaban del amor de dos padres maravillosos y de muchas aventuras con mis hermanos. Aunque estamos dispersos por todo el país, todavía somos muy cercanos y disfrutamos reunirnos cada dos años para ponernos al día con todos. Nací y crecí siendo Católica, por lo que espero poder enseñar en un salón de clases donde pueda expresar mi amor por Dios y mi fe Católica.

Comencé mi carrera docente en Marceline, MO, donde enseñaba inglés a estudiantes del grado 11 y 12. Enseñé en Marceline durante 7 años y pasé a enseñar inglés en Brookfield durante dos años después de mi divorcio. Después de mi anulación y la graduación de mi hijo de la preparatoria, dejé esa parte de Missouri y me mudé a Knob Noster para enseñar inglés en la preparatoria en Knob Noster. Enseñé inglés durante 6 años, luego me mudé a la biblioteca y me convertí en bibliotecaria durante 6 años. Me jubilé en 2013 y asumí un puesto de medio tiempo como maestra mentora principal para el distrito escolar Sedalia 200 durante los últimos 11 años. Me jubilé por completo en mayo de este año, pero sentí que el Señor me llevaba al Sagrado Corazón, donde un amigo había aceptado un puesto y me pidió que considerara postularme para el puesto de inglés aquí.

Aunque he estado fuera de los salones de inglés durante algunos años, espero trabajar con estudiantes en una escuela Católica. Después de visitar a la Sra. Manning, sentí que Dios me estaba guiando para asumir este puesto y estoy lista para el desafío de trabajar con estudiantes inspiradores en un entorno centrado en Dios. Estoy agradecida por esta oportunidad y espero trabajar con el personal, los maestros, los padres y, sobre todo, los estudiantes del Sagrado Corazón.

Ilsi Palacios | Religión de secundaria y preparatoria

Mi nombre es Ilsi Palacios, soy de El Salvador, pero vivo en Sedalia desde hace 14 años. Nuestra familia es parte de la parroquia de San Vicente de Paúl, mi esposo José y yo somos los coordinadores actuales del grupo de oración local de Renovación Carismática Católica. Tenemos cuatro hijos y nuestros dos hijos, Josué y David, entrarán a 3º y 1º grado este año en el Sagrado Corazón.

¡Estoy muy feliz de regresar a la Escuela del Sagrado Corazón después de 4 años! Enseñé español desde Kinder a 12º grado de 2010 a 2020 y enseñaré religión para la secundaria y preparatoria el próximo año escolar. Descubrí que enseñar era una de mis pasiones desde una temprana edad en mi vida. Cuando estaba en el cuarto grado, enseñé a leer y escribir a un grupo de vecinos adolescentes. En ese momento El Salvador atravesaba una Guerra Civil, esta fue la razón por la cual muchos niños no tenían la oportunidad de ir a la escuela. Ese fue el caso de algunos de mis nuevos vecinos en ese momento.

Crecí practicando la fe Católica, pero cuando tenía 13 años asistí a un Seminario de Vida en el Espíritu. Esta experiencia me acercó a Dios y cambió mi forma de ver todo. Entendí que la vida es un regalo de Dios, nuestro tiempo, talentos y tesoros son dados por Él. A los 18, profundicé en los estudios de la Biblia, los Santos y comencé a dar y dirigir retiros dentro y fuera de nuestra diócesis. Incluyendo México y El Salvador en el último año. ¡Dedicar fines de semana y noches enteras a servir al Señor más maravilloso es increíble! Como dice el Salmo 33: “Probad y ved cuán bueno es el Señor”. ¡Pasar mi juventud bajo Su señorío es lo mejor que me ha pasado en la vida!

Como ya puedes ver, ¡enseñar sobre nuestra fe Católica también es una gran pasión para mí! Por supuesto, también disfruto pasar tiempo con mi familia, por ejemplo, ir de campar en el hermoso lago Table Rock, cerca de Branson. En el aspecto deportivo, me he convertido en una fanática de los Chiefs. Jugué fútbol durante la preparatoria y es el deporte que más disfruto. Estoy ansiosa por conocer estudiantes nuevos y antiguos, para aprender más sobre ellos. Pero sobre todo ayudarlos a crecer en su relación con Cristo.

Durante los últimos dos años he tomado cursos de formación en la fe en el Instituto Teológico Pontificio Juan Pablo II y he recibido una certificación de Enseñanza Social Católica del Departamento de Justicia, Paz y Desarrollo Humano de la Conferencia de Obispos de los Estados Unidos. Mis estudios de pregrado y posgrado son en Psicología, Español e Inglés como Segundo Idioma de la Universidad Estatal de Pittsburg (Estado de Kansas). Espero comenzar una Maestría en Teología Aplicada este otoño.

El inicio de las temporadas 2024-2025 se acerca rápidamente. A lo largo del verano tenemos muchas incorporaciones nuevas a nuestro cuerpo técnico y estoy emocionada de compartir esta alineación con ustedes. Los estudiantes y el cuerpo técnico dedicaron muchas horas este verano a prepararse para el próximo año. ¡Estoy muy orgullosa de todos sus esfuerzos y espero con ansias un gran año! El primer día de práctica oficial de otoño para los programas de la preparatoria es el lunes 12 de agosto. La secundaria es el lunes 19 de agosto. No dude en comunicarse con nuestros entrenadores si tiene alguna pregunta.

Nos complace anunciar un nuevo programa que se ofrecerá para 2024-2025, Tiro con arco. Este programa comienza antes de las vacaciones de Navidad y finaliza en marzo. El nuevo programa estará dirigido por Mike Schwartz. Habrá un pequeño costo asociado con el programa para camisetas e inscripciones a eventos individuales.

Inscripciones en puestos de concesión de voleibol de Booster Club

Si tienes un estudiante atleta, no es demasiado pronto para inscribirte para trabajar en el puesto de comida. Cada estudiante atleta debe trabajar dos turnos en el puesto de comida del Booster Club. Se requiere un padre si el estudiante es menor de 14 años. Si un estudiante y un padre trabajan en el mismo turno, entonces se cubren dos turnos y usted ha cumplido con su requisito. ¡Ahora es un buen momento para que los atletas de invierno y primavera cumplan con sus requisitos antes de sus temporadas!

 Si no se cumple con el requisito del puesto de comida, se le cobrarán $100 a su cuenta FACTS.

Nuestro próximo pedido interno de tarjetas de regalo físicas será el martes 26 de agosto. Todos los pedidos enviados a la oficina de la escuela antes del final de clases, o a través de la aplicación RaiseRight antes de las 8 p.m. del día 26, se incluirán en el pedido. Los pedidos deberían estar listos para ser recogidos la semana siguiente.

No olvide que tenemos varios minoristas SOLO disponibles a través de la oficina (es decir, Casey’s, Cenex, Shell, Colton’s, Kehde’s, McD, Menards, Taco Bell, Walgreens y VISA, por nombrar algunos). Con el año escolar llegando a su fin, pasaremos a nuestro horario de verano para completar pedidos.
