It is March 1st and spring is right around the corner! Yea!!!
Congratulations go out today to Coach Goodwin and the varsity basketball boys for winning the MSHSAA Class 2 District 8 Basketball Tournament this past Saturday evening in Smithton. The boys utilized a strong 4th quarter comeback to pull out a thrilling 45-41 win over a very good Lincoln Cardinal team.
Our friends at Helias Catholic High School will host us in their fieldhouse in Jefferson City on Wednesday as we take on the Salisbury Panthers in the sectional round of the state tournament. The game tips off at 7:45pm. The Grems take a 24-4 record and a 9 game winning streak into the contest. Thanks so much to everyone who came to support our “Battle of the Brains” Annual Fund Drive kickoff event this past Saturday. It really looked like everyone was in the Mardi Gras spirit! Congratulations to Mrs. Van Leer and her development volunteers on another smashingly successful event!
And finally, please be sure to check out the front page of today’s Sedalia Democrat. Third grader Sarah Kehl is featured for her fantastic performance in conducting the Sedalia Symphony this past Sunday! Way to go Sarah and Well done Gremlins!

Tomorrow, Ash Wednesday, we begin Lent.
We have a lot of activities planned for the All School Mass including the distribution of ashes. Anyone who believes in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ can receive ashes. This happens right after the homily. We come up the same way we come up to receive Eucharist. The one giving the ashes will say “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” and your response is “Amen.” Today is a great day to spend some time in prayer asking three questions:
Lord, what are you asking me to abstain/fast from? Remember, we should always be striving to overcome sin. That means if the action is sinful, we always try to keep from doing that (and don’t want to commit the sin on Sundays and once Easter arrives.) Lent is always a good time to make a concerted effort to work with God’s graces to overcome sin; fasting/abstaining is “giving up something” that in itself is not harmful. This is so nothing becomes a false idol; something more important than God. Examples might be: giving up social media, sweets, soda, use of phone except for emergencies, bread, or meat.
Lord, how do you want me to increase my prayer? Examples include: reading from the Bible each day; reading the daily Mass readings; rosary; time in front of the Blessed Sacrament; attending 6:30am Mass once a week; Divine Mercy Chaplet; Christian Music as the only music to listen to during Lent. If Sunday Mass or Worship with your faith community is not a weekly habit, start there. None of this makes sense if that is missing.
Lord, how do you want me to increase my giving to you? There are a lot of excellent causes that desire our financial assistance and our gifts of time and talents. Where and how is the Lord calling me to give? If I give up 2 hours a day of social media and I don’t eat out once a week, I have time to write to everyone on Sister Mary Ruth Wand’s list whom she visits and I have the money I need to put a stamp on the envelopes and send them. I could go shopping for food to take to Open Door and then help out for a few hours each week.
Jesus is calling each of us to do something in each of these areas: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Together, as a Universal Church (Catholics) we do not eat meat on Fridays. Let’s make this the best Lent ever!

Warm Weather Dress Season – Started Today!
Happy March 1st! We have been blessed with nice weather today, as we kick off “shorts season.” . Please remember that all shorts and skirts/skorts must extend at least 5” past the top of the knee. If your student has outgrown their shorts over the winter, visit the school store, they are stocked up!
Paid Dress Up “Zach Parsons” – March 2 – TOMORROW
This Wednesday, March 2, students will have a Paid Dress UP day to benefit the Sacred Heart Fine Arts Program in memory of Zach Parsons. Different from a typical Paid Dress DOWN day, students are asked to dress in their best as we remember and honor the life of Zach Parsons with a Dress UP Day. Zach, a Sacred Heart junior at the time of his death, held high standards and goals in every area of his life, from how he treated others, to how he chose to dress.
“You look good, you do good,” he liked to say. Zach treated everyone with respect and kindness.
On this anniversary, we ask that students not only dress up but stretch beyond their comfort zones to lift others up in respect and kindness. Tomorrow’s Dress UP day will coincide with our “I Dare You” award presentation so Zach’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Parsons will be joining us for Mass.
ALL proceeds from this Dress UP Day will be matched by the Parsons Family (up to $1000) AND an anonymous donor, to benefit Sacred Heart’s Fine Arts Program—that’s up to $3,000 for our Fine Arts program, so PLEASE give and act generously, in memory of Zach. No jeans allowed.

2022 Winter Homecoming
Congratulations to the Winter Homecoming Court: Seniors Emily McDonald, Ian Viscarra Mendez, Queen Kiley Beykirch, King Coen Brown, Arly Ponce, Noe Umana Ramos, Allie Finney, and Bruno Saucedo. The senior class also won the spirit stick and will earn a day off of school.
A big thank you to the Student Council for making the Winter Homecoming a fun filled event with lots of great dress-up days! We had 100% participation from all of the high school students for the theme days. The pep rally was our best one yet, with a special thanks to Mrs. Amanda Blackburn for organizing it.
Sacred Heart Speech Team Performs at Bellarmine Speech League
The Jr. High Speech Team participated in the Bellarmine Speech Contest on Saturday, February 26, at St. Mary’s in Glasgow, Mo., earning seven blue ribbons (highest awarded) and two red ribbons (second-highest awarded). This was the first meet for the team and the first-ever competition for six members of the team.
In the serious solo category, original works written and performed by Logan Howell (“Chocolate”) and Cassidy Bentch (“The Great Debate”) earned blue ribbons.
All three humorous entries earned blue ribbons. Thomas Jenkins performed “Doomsday Weather Report”; Sidnee City performed “ER”; and Eliza Noble performed “Strangers.”
In the duet category Ryan Hill and R.J. Hladik took home a blue ribbon for their duet called “Colonization” and Olivia Dillon and Katherine Kehl earned a red for their duet called “Wait! Wait! Superhero!”
The team is coached by Liz Van Leer and assisted by Chelsea Turner.

The SHS Foundation “Mardi Gra-mlin” Watch Party/Battle of the Brains Annual Fund Drive Kickoff was bursting at the seams with memorable moments. Congrats to our District Champs and team “Smardi Gras” for taking top spot in two tightly contested matches! The winner is indeed Sacred Heart School!
Battle of the Brains is over, but our dear school’s very important 2022 Annual Fund Drive is only just beginning. ¡Es 1 de marzo y la primavera está a la vuelta de la esquina! ¡¡¡Sí!!!
Felicitaciones al entrenador Goodwin ya los muchachos del equipo varsity de baloncesto por ganar el Torneo de Baloncesto del Distrito 8 Clase 2 de MSHSAA el pasado sábado por la noche en Smithton. Los muchachos utilizaron una fuerte remontada en el cuarto cuarto para lograr una emocionante victoria por 45-41 sobre un muy buen equipo de Lincoln Cardinal.

Escuela del Sagrado Corazón
Mañana es Miércoles de Cenizas y con ello damos comienzo a la cuaresma
Tenemos muchas actividades planeadas para la Misa escolar, incluida la distribución de cenizas. Cualquiera que crea en la muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo puede recibir cenizas. Esto sucede justo después de la homilía. Subimos de la misma manera que subimos para recibir la Eucaristía. El que entregue las cenizas dirá “Arrepentíos y creed en el Evangelio”. y su respuesta es “Amén”. Hoy es un gran día para pasar un tiempo en oración haciendo tres preguntas:
Señor, ¿de qué me pides que me abstenga/ayune? Recuerde, siempre debemos esforzarnos por vencer el pecado. Eso significa que si la acción es pecaminosa, siempre tratamos de evitar hacer eso (y no queremos cometer el pecado los domingos y una vez que llega la Pascua). La Cuaresma siempre es un buen momento para hacer un esfuerzo concertado para trabajar con las gracias de Dios. para vencer el pecado; ayunar/abstenerse es “renunciar a algo” que en sí mismo no es dañino. Esto es para que nada se convierta en un ídolo falso; algo más importante que Dios. Los ejemplos pueden ser: renunciar a las redes sociales, dulces, refrescos, uso del teléfono excepto para emergencias, pan o carne.
Señor, ¿cómo quieres que aumente mi oración? Los ejemplos incluyen: leer la Biblia todos los días; leer las lecturas diarias de la Misa; rosario; tiempo frente al Santísimo Sacramento; asistir a Misa de 6:30 am una vez por semana; Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia; Música cristiana como única música para escuchar durante la Cuaresma. Si la misa dominical o el culto con su comunidad de fe no es un hábito semanal, comience por ahí. Nada de esto tiene sentido si falta eso.
Señor, ¿cómo quieres que aumente mi ofrenda hacia ti? Hay muchas causas excelentes que desean nuestra ayuda financiera y nuestros dones de tiempo y talento. ¿Dónde y cómo me llama el Señor a dar? Si renuncio a 2 horas diarias de redes sociales y no salgo a comer una vez a la semana, tengo tiempo para escribir a todos los que están en la lista de la hermana Mary Ruth Wand a quienes visita y tengo el dinero que necesito para sellar los sobres y enviarlos. Podría ir a comprar comida para llevar a Open Door y luego ayudar durante unas horas cada semana.
Jesús nos está llamando a cada uno de nosotros a hacer algo en cada una de estas áreas: ayuno, oración y limosna. Juntos, como Iglesia Universal (católicos) no comemos carne los viernes. ¡Hagamos de esta la mejor Cuaresma de todos los tiempos!

¡Feliz 1 de marzo! Hemos sido bendecidos con un clima agradable hoy, ya que comenzamos la “temporada de pantalones cortos”. Recuerde que todos los pantalones cortos y faldas/pantalones cortos deben extenderse al menos 5” más allá de la parte superior de la rodilla. Si a su estudiante se le han quedado pequeños los pantalones cortos durante el invierno, visite la tienda de la escuela, ¡están abastecidos!
Paid Dress Up “Zach Parsons” – 2 de marzo – mañana
Este miércoles 2 de marzo, los estudiantes tendrán un Paid Dress UP day a beneficio del Programa de Bellas Artes del Sagrado Corazón en memoria de Zach Parsons. A diferencia de un típico Paid Dress Down, se les pide a los estudiantes que se vistan lo mejor posible mientras recordamos y honramos la vida de Zach Parsons con un día de vestimenta elegante. Zach, un estudiante de undécimo grado en el momento de su muerte, tenía altos estándares y metas en cada área de su vida, desde cómo trataba a los demás hasta cómo elegía vestirse.
“Te ves bien, lo haces bien”, le gustaba decir. Zach trató a todos con respeto y amabilidad.
En este aniversario, les pedimos a los estudiantes que no solo se vistan bien, sino que se esfuercen más allá de sus zonas de comodidad para animar a los demás con respeto y amabilidad. El día de Dress UP de mañana coincidirá con nuestra presentación de premios “I Dare You”, por lo que los padres de Zach, el Sr. y la Sra. Parsons se unirán a nosotros para la Misa.

Homecoming de invierno 2022

La clase de último año también ganó el palo de espíritu y obtendrá un día libre de la escuela.
¡Muchas gracias al Consejo Estudiantil por hacer de Homecoming de invierno un evento lleno de diversión con muchos días de disfraces geniales! Tuvimos una participación del 100% de todos los estudiantes de preparatoria para los días temáticos. La asamblea fue la mejor hasta ahora, con un agradecimiento especial a la Sra. Amanda Blackburn por organizarla.
El equipo de oratoria del Sagrado Corazón se presenta en la Liga de oratoria de Bellarmine
El equipo de oratoria de la secundaria participó en el concurso de oratoria Bellarmine el sábado 26 de febrero en St. Mary’s en Glasgow, Mo., ganando siete listones azules (el premio más alto) y dos listones rojos (el segundo premio más alto). Este fue el primer encuentro para el equipo y la primera competencia para seis miembros del equipo.
En la categoría de solistas serios, las obras originales escritas e interpretadas por Logan Howell (“Chocolate”) y Cassidy Bentch (“The Great Debate”) ganaron listones azules.
Las tres entradas humorísticas ganaron cintas azules. Thomas Jenkins interpretó “Doomsday Weather Report”; Sidnee City interpretó “ER”; y Eliza Noble interpretó “Strangers”.
