JH and HS Spring Sports 2021

Welcome to the first edition of the sports corner! Our goal is to keep parents informed, engaged and to provide information for all of our current and upcoming athletic opportunities as well as all of the need-to-know information!

March 1st is the opening day for spring sports practices. On this season’s spring sports line up:

HIGH SCHOOL Spring Sports

  • BASEBALL coached by Jaric Reid and assisted by Gavin Jones and Chad Damlo
  • SOFTBALL coached by Maddy Kilby, Betsy Gerke, and Candice Hout
  • BOYS GOLF coached by Steve Goodwin and Carla Lucchesi
  • TRACK AND FIELD coached by Carrie Smith
  • TENNIS CLUB coached by Andrea Henke

JUNIOR HIGH Spring Sports

  • TRACK AND FIELD coached by Carrie Smith
  • TENNIS CLUB coached by Andrea Henke

NEW this year we will offer a TENNIS CLUB for 7th through 12th graders, boys, and girls. The club will practice at Liberty park with Andrea Henke taking on the head coach position. We will also have some elite guest coaches make appearances on some club days. Our hope is to have enough to have a full team for next year that can compete. We traditionally have tennis in the spring which is the MSHSAA boys season, however, girls can also play so we have a co-ed team but are required to have boys on the team to be able to compete. Participating in the club is an AMAZING opportunity to learn the game so we are ready to compete next spring!

NEED TO KNOW INFORMATION

What does my child need to be prepared for practice?

BASEBALL –  Baseball players will need to have baseball cleats and a pair of tennis shoes at practice every day. As you know, inclement weather can come rapidly in Missouri and they will need to be prepared for practice to transfer indoors. Players will also need to have baseball pants every day unless told otherwise by coaches. With COVID-19 guidelines, it is recommended that players also have their own helmets to wear for games and scrimmages. The school will still provide helmets if players do not have one, and the team helmets will be disinfected after each use. Players will also need to provide their own baseball gloves for use. After handing out several gloves over the years that have not been returned to me, I will no longer be helping out in this area.

Please reiterate that practice times shown on the schedule are when we will START and we WILL NOT wait on players who are late. I recommend arriving on the field 10-15 minutes earlier than the start time to allow time to change into cleats/pants. There is no good spot to change clothes at Centennial park so players are recommended to change into baseball pants in locker rooms at the school or inside their cars at the field. Changing outside at the park where there are people exercising and there is an elementary school across the street could result in school administrators being called. I have outlined in my player conduct/rules what I expect if a player will be late or miss practice due to other circumstances such as doctor’s appointments and/or school-related activities like Math Team competitions or play practice etc. I will include an attachment with those documents with player, parent, AND coach expectations as well as coaching philosophy and will be handing them out at player/parent meetings.

SOFTBALL –   Practice starts Monday, March 1st in the Hoying gym, we will try to be on the field the rest of the week, weather permitting. Practice times will be 3:30-5:30 unless notified of a change. Always bring cleats and tennis shoes as weather conditions can change throughout the day. Bring your own water bottle, appropriate practice attire, your glove.

BOYS GOLF – Practice will start Monday, March 1st after school at the Sedalia Country Club. Proper golf course attire is required, collared shirts, proper pants or shorts and shoes for the course, no denim, nothing with holes in it. Please make sure you are prepared for all weather conditions.

TRACK AND FIELD – Practice will start Monday, March 1st after school until 4:15, you will meet Mrs. Smith in the main gym. Please make sure your child brings appropriate practice attire for indoor or outdoor practice and a water bottle.

TENNIS – Tennis Club starts Monday, March 1 in the McGremlin gym after school until 4:30. They need to bring a tennis racquet, water bottle and wear comfortable clothing with tennis shoes.

Is it too late for my child to play?

No, it is not too late at all, however that window will close in the next 2 weeks once rosters are due to MSHSAA.

Does my child need a physical to play?

Every child that participates in athletics is required to have a current physical (physicals are now good for 2 years) in addition to the physical we also must have the following each year:

  1. A signed handbook agreement

  2. The MSHSAA pre-participation form

These forms are all available on our website  on the athletic page at: https://www.gogremlins.com/athletics/

*Health insurance is required to participate in school athletics. If you do not have health insurance please contact me: we have an affordable policy available to you, that is only for athletics and will cover your child so they can participate
