Fifth Grade Takes on Atoms

Students drew, created, or assembled a diagram of an atom model using electron cloud diagraming. Students made their own atoms in creative ways. They looked at sample models which had been drawn in class and was inside other student’s notebooks for help with this project.

The internet could also be used as a source of information. The students were encouraged to look for the electron cloud model, not dot diagrams, or Neil Bohr’s representation. There were lots of different models on the internet, but atoms that included the electron cloud were the most current accepted models.

Models needed to be neat and organized and could have been made in any form the student desired. The students were asked to color code or find a way to differentiate between protons, neutrons, and electrons in their projects.  Students were to include the correct amount of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Electron and placement of energy levels within the electron cloud were to be in the correct sequences.

Students got to choose any element on the periodic chart higher than 8-Oxygen or lower than 47-Silver.

The winner of this contest was David Gutierrez, Sacred Heart 5th-grader.
