Dear Sacred Heart Families and Students,

 

This past weekend, several parishioners and I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a faith-focused retreat that left a lasting impact on us. Leading up to the event, we felt a mix of anxiety and worry about stepping away from our daily routines, but we quickly encountered God’s wisdom and love in profound ways.

 

At first, the idea of spending time in silence and reflection felt daunting. However, our hearts and minds opened up through prayer, study, meditation, and fellowship. It was incredibly rewarding to invest in our faith education.

 

We learned that busyness often distracts us from God, and our hearts yearn for more time with Him. We invite you to carve out moments in your busy schedules to simply “be” with God. Prioritizing family prayer and attending church can strengthen your family’s connection to faith. This retreat was transformative, and we believe that similar experiences can be life-changing for everyone.

We pray that you and your family deepen your daily connection with God. Many of us find that this connection is the missing piece in our lives.

Priests’ Institute & CLSA Convention

Last week Fr. Joe and I were together with most of our brother priests from across the Diocese of Jefferson City for a week of ongoing formation and fraternity. We heard from Rhonda Gruenewald, foundress of Vocation Ministry, a group that works with dioceses and parishes across the country to promote parish-based vocations ministries, and also from our own Father Paul Clark, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Jefferson City, about how we plan to implement some of what we learned from Mrs. Gruenewald.

Fr. Joe is back on campus this week, but I am away again, this week in Albuquerque, NM for the annual convention of the Canon Law Society of America, to do some professional development and networking for the other work that I do for our diocese, in addition to my assignments here at St. Vincent de Paul Parish and Sacred Heart School.

Which Saint Teresa?

The Catholic Church recognizes and venerates several different saints named Teresa, and during the month of October, we celebrate two of them!

St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Although her full religious name was Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, St. Thérèse is also known simply as “The Little Flower.” She entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux, in northwestern France, at the age of 15 and lived there as a contemplative, cloistered nun until her death from tuberculosis only nine years later, in 1897, at the age of 24.

Her spiritual autobiography, Story of a Soul, has become a classic work of Catholic spirituality, and on account of her spiritual theology St. Thérèse is recognized as a Doctor of the Church, a title given to saints whose teaching has made important contributions to Catholic theology. In her writing, St. Thérèse wrote about the “little way” to holiness, emphasizing simplicity, humility, and always doing even the smallest things with the greatest love.

Her feast day was on October 1, near the date of her death, September 30, a date already taken in the liturgical calendar by the feast day of St. Jerome.

St. Teresa of Ávila

A kind of spiritual great-grandmother to the Little Flower, St. Teresa of Ávila was a Spanish Carmelite nun who lived in the 16th century. St. Teresa was a mystic, and also a great reformer of the Carmelite religious order. Together with St. John of the Cross, she reformed both the men’s and women’s branches of the Carmelite order to a simpler way of life and a stricter observance of the Carmelite Rule. The communities who follow her reforms are known today as the Discalced Carmelites.

(As an aside, the Diocese of Jefferson City was blessed to have a convent of Discalced Carmelite nuns next door to the Cathedral of St. Joseph for many years, from 1960 until 2013. At that time, the three remaining nuns moved from their monastery to a residence on the grounds of the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Clyde, MO. The sisters still welcome prayer requests at carmelofjc.prayers@gmail.com.)

St. Teresa is also recognized as a Doctor of the Church, for her contributions to spiritual and mystical theology, especially in her works The Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection. Her feast day is today, October 15.

8th Grade Retreat

Say a prayer tomorrow, Wednesday the 16th, for our Sacred Heart 8th graders, who will be together on retreat all day. They’ll be here on campus but away from their ordinary classes. Spending the day together for prayer, reflection, and fun. The retreat will be led by Kevin Morales and his team. The theme is “Love God – Love One Another.”

Key Club Rides the Rides

SH Wins 1st at Kaysinger Art Contest

 

The High School Kaysinger Art Contest on October 9 was an unforgettable day of expression for our artists. They won first place in the group competition. Their show-stopping creation, a fire-breathing dragon made from newspaper, tape, and sticks with blazing red and orange leaf flames left the judges in awe.

Thomas Jenkins also shone, securing 3rd place in Pen and Ink with his intricate sketch of the Liberty Park bridge.

The fierce competition and the pressure to create a masterpiece in just two hours was intense. These SH artists rose to the challenge and delivered incredible work. Well done, Grems!

Sacred Heart FCCLA Shines at Region 12 Meeting with Learning and Leadership

Sacred Heart FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) had an enriching experience at the Region 12 meeting on October 2 at UCM.

Eighteen of our 21 affiliated members attended, participating in a day filled with learning and inspiration. Keynote speaker Ky Turner energized the crowd, encouraging everyone to pursue their passions, seize opportunities, and view challenges as opportunities for growth.

Throughout the day, members attended workshops on leadership, time management, national FCCLA programs, competitive events, and running for office. The day concluded with a devotional, recognition ceremony, and the FCCLA creed. Making it a memorable day of learning, team-building, and connecting with FCCLA members from across the region.

Another GREAT High 5 Friday today brought to you by the SFCC Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams! Each door was packed with amazing soccer players giving high 5’s and bringing out the smiles! It was extra special because of the familiar faces. We had a great visit from our class of 2024 students who are now Roadrunner soccer players, George Bain, Traven Wheeler, Andreas Venegas and Margo Karpenchuk! Have a great Friday!!!

Conference Tournament Recap

Congratulations to the boys’ soccer team on winning first place in the Kaysinger Conference Tournament this past Friday night. The boys played LaMonte and came out on top 9-1!

Congratulations to the Volleyball team on placing 4th in the conference tournament. The girls performed well and fell short of bringing home 3rd. We are proud of their progress! Congratulations girls!

Rosary Rally

All our Sacred Heart students and families are also welcome to join us the next day, on Saturday, October 19th, at 12:00pm for our annual St. Vincent de Paul Parish Rosary Rally. We will meet on the sidewalk outside the Parish Center on the east side of Sacred Heart Chapel.

Don’t forget we have several retailers ONLY available through the office (i.e. Casey’s, Cenex, Shell, Colton’s, Kehde’s, McD, Menards, Taco Bell, Walgreens, and VISA to name a few). Stop in at the school office on Tuesdays and Thursdays during our volunteer open hours from 9:00am – 11:00am for immediate purchases, or drop your order at the school office or email it to the program coordinator at scrip@gogremlins.com. Our volunteers will fill your order on Tuesdays and Thursdays and let you know when it’s available for pick-up. We will not be at Masses this weekend. We will be back on Sunday, October 27th. Estimadas familias y estudiantes del Sagrado Corazón,

 

 

El fin de semana pasado, varios feligreses y yo tuvimos la maravillosa oportunidad de asistir a un retiro centrado en la fe que nos dejó un impacto duradero. Antes del evento, sentimos una mezcla de ansiedad y preocupación por alejarnos de nuestras rutinas diarias, pero rápidamente encontramos la sabiduría y el amor de Dios de manera profunda.

 

Al principio, la idea de pasar tiempo en silencio y reflexión me pareció desalentadora. Sin embargo, nuestros corazones y mentes se abrieron a través de la oración, el estudio, la meditación y el compañerismo. Fue increíblemente gratificante invertir en nuestra educación religiosa.

 

Aprendimos que el estar ocupado a menudo nos distrae de Dios y que nuestro corazón anhela más tiempo con Él. Te invitamos a buscar momentos en sus apretadas agendas para simplemente “estar” con Dios. Dar prioridad a la oración familiar y asistir a la iglesia puede fortalecer la conexión de su familia con la fe. Este retiro fue transformador y creemos que experiencias similares pueden cambiar la vida de todos.

 

Oramos para que usted y su familia profundicen su conexión diaria con Dios. Muchos de nosotros descubrimos que esta conexión es la pieza que falta en nuestras vidas.

Instituto de Sacerdotes y Convención CLSA

La semana pasada el Padre Joe y yo estuvimos juntos con la mayoría de nuestros hermanos sacerdotes de toda la Diócesis de Jefferson City durante una semana de formación continua y fraternidad. Escuchamos a Rhonda Gruenewald, fundadora del Ministerio Vocacional, un grupo que trabaja con diócesis y parroquias de todo el país para promover ministerios vocacionales parroquiales, y también a nuestro propio Padre Paul Clark, Director de Vocaciones de la Diócesis de Jefferson City, sobre cómo planeamos implementar algo de lo que aprendimos de la Sra. Gruenewald.

Padre Joe está de regreso en el campus esta semana, pero yo estoy fuera otra vez, esta semana en Albuquerque, Nuevo México, para la convención anual de la Sociedad de Derecho Canónico de América, para desarrollarme profesionalmente y establecer contactos para el resto del trabajo que hago para nuestra diócesis. Además de mis asignaciones aquí en la Parroquia San Vicente de Paúl y la Escuela del Sagrado Corazón.

¿Cual Santa Teresa?

La Iglesia Católica reconoce y venera a varios santos diferentes llamados Teresa, ¡y durante el mes de octubre celebramos dos de ellos!

Santa Teresa de Lisieux

Aunque su nombre religioso completo era Teresa del Niño Jesús y la Santa Faz, Santa Teresa también es conocida simplemente como “La Pequeña Flor”. Ingresó al convento Carmelita de Lisieux, en el noroeste de Francia, a la edad de 15 años y vivió allí como monja contemplativa de clausura hasta su muerte por tuberculosis sólo nueve años después, en 1897, a la edad de 24 años.

Su autobiografía espiritual, Historia de un Alma, se ha convertido en una obra clásica de la espiritualidad Católica y, debido a su teología espiritual, Santa Teresa es reconocida como Doctora de la Iglesia, título otorgado a santos cuyas enseñanzas han hecho importantes contribuciones a la teología de la Iglesia católica. En sus escritos, Santa Teresa escribió sobre el “pequeño camino” hacia la santidad, enfatizando la sencillez, la humildad y haciendo siempre hasta las cosas más pequeñas con el mayor amor.

Su fiesta fue el 1 de octubre, cerca de la fecha de su muerte, el 30 de septiembre, fecha ya incluida en el calendario litúrgico por la fiesta de San Jerónimo.

Santa Teresa de Ávila

Una especie de bisabuela espiritual de la Pequeña Flor, Santa Teresa de Ávila fue una monja Carmelita española que vivió en el siglo XVI. Santa Teresa fue una mística y también una gran reformadora de la orden religiosa Carmelita. Junto con San Juan de la Cruz, reformó las ramas masculina y femenina de la orden Carmelita hacia una forma de vida más sencilla y una observancia más estricta de la Regla Carmelita. Las comunidades que siguieron sus reformas se conocen hoy como Carmelitas Descalzas.

(Aparte, la Diócesis de Jefferson City tuvo la suerte de tener un convento de monjas Carmelitas Descalzas al lado de la Catedral de San José durante muchos años, desde 1960 hasta 2013. En ese momento, las tres monjas restantes se mudaron de su monasterio a una residencia en los terrenos de las Hermanas Benedictinas de la Adoración Perpetua en Clyde, MO. Las hermanas todavía aceptan solicitudes de oración en carmelofjc.prayers@gmail.com.

Santa Teresa también es reconocida como Doctora de la Iglesia, por sus aportes a la teología espiritual y mística, especialmente en sus obras El Castillo Interior y El Camino de Perfección. Su fiesta es hoy, 15 de octubre.

Retiro de octavo grado

Haga una oración mañana miércoles 16 por nuestros alumnos de 8vo grado del Sagrado Corazón, quienes estarán juntos en retiro todo el día. Estarán aquí en el campus pero fuera de sus clases ordinarias. Pasarán el día juntos para orar, reflexionar y divertirse. El retiro estará dirigido por Kevin Morales y su equipo. El tema es “Amar a Dios, amarnos unos a otros”.

Que el Señor les bendiga y les guarde, que haga resplandecer su rostro sobre ustedes y les dé paz.

Key Club se sube a los juegos

 

 

¡Gracias a nuestro SHS Key Club por organizar un momento espantosamente bueno en el Halloween Haunt de Worlds of Fun! Dato curioso: la celebración de Halloween se remonta a la celebración Católica del Día de Todos los Santos y de Todos los Difuntos. ¡Esté atento a más información sobre cómo conmemorar estos días especiales con nosotros!

 

SH gana el primer lugar en el concurso de arte Kaysinger

 

 

El Concurso de Arte Kaysinger de la Escuela Secundaria el 9 de octubre fue un día inolvidable de expresión para nuestros artistas. Obtuvieron el primer lugar en la competencia grupal. Su espectacular creación, un dragón que escupe fuego hecho con periódico, cinta adhesiva y palos con llamas de hojas rojas y naranjas, dejó a los jueces asombrados.

 

Thomas Jenkins también brilló, asegurando el tercer lugar en Pen and Ink con su intrincado boceto del puente de Liberty Park.

 

La feroz competencia y la presión para crear una obra maestra en sólo dos horas fue intensa. Estos artistas de SH aceptaron el desafío y realizaron un trabajo increíble. ¡Bien hecho, Grems!

Sagrado Corazón FCCLA brilla en la reunión de la Región 12 con aprendizaje y liderazgo

 

Sagrado Corazón FCCLA (Líderes de Familia, Carrera y Comunidad de América) tuvo una experiencia enriquecedora en la reunión de la Región 12 el 2 de octubre en la UCM.

 

Asistieron dieciocho de nuestros 21 miembros afiliados, participando en un día lleno de aprendizaje e inspiración. El orador principal Ky Turner animó a la multitud, alentando a todos a perseguir sus pasiones, aprovechar las oportunidades y ver los desafíos como oportunidades de crecimiento.

 

A lo largo del día, los miembros asistieron a talleres sobre liderazgo, gestión del tiempo, programas nacionales de la FCCLA, eventos competitivos y postulaciones para cargos públicos. El día concluyó con un devocional, una ceremonia de reconocimiento y el credo de la FCCLA. Haciendo que sea un día memorable de aprendizaje, trabajo en equipo y conexión con miembros de FCCLA de toda la región.

¡Otro GRAN viernes de High 5 hoy presentado por los equipos de fútbol masculino y femenino de SFCC! ¡Cada puerta estaba llena de increíbles jugadores de fútbol que chocaban los 5 y sacaban sonrisas! Fue muy especial por las caras familiares. ¡Tuvimos una gran visita de nuestra clase de 2024 estudiantes que ahora son jugadores de fútbol de Roadrunner, George Bain, Traven Wheeler, Andreas Venegas y Margo Karpenchuk! ¡¡¡Que tengas un excelente viernes!!!

Resumen del Torneo de la Conferencia

Felicitaciones al equipo de fútbol masculino por ganar el primer lugar en el Torneo de la Conferencia Kaysinger el viernes pasado por la noche. ¡Los muchachos jugaron contra LaMonte y ganaron 9-1!

Felicitaciones al equipo de Voleibol por quedar en cuarto lugar en el torneo de la conferencia. Las chicas se desempeñaron bien y no lograron llegar a casa en tercer lugar. ¡Estamos orgullosos de su progreso! ¡Felicidades chicas!

Rally del Rosario
