Distant Learning in Third Grade with Mrs. Tippie and Mrs. Williams
Realizing every Sacred Heart family is different, the third-grade teachers, Mrs. Tippie and Mrs. Williams have tried various strategies to meet the diverse needs of students and parents. For example, instructional lessons are provided both by supplying hard copies and by scanning the documents. This way families who are not able to print off work can pick it up from the front office at their convenience. On the other hand, those families that prefer to get work electronically, receive files to open and print.
Additionally, parents have both an electronic and hard copy option for turning in work and retrieving checked work. Actual instruction by the teachers is completed via live Zoom meetings as well as recorded instructional lessons.
We have learned so many new things during distance learning. Two things really stand out though. One is that Sacred Heart parents are phenomenal. We mean that sincerely. They are trying so hard to motivate and help their children and are the most supportive people we have ever known. They keep encouraging us and complimenting us. We are in awe of their kindness.
The second thing we have learned does not really surprise us. The best part of teaching is being with the students. We miss seeing their faces in the morning! We miss seeing them chat with their friends. We miss them taking forever to line up. We miss their jokes and we miss seeing understanding light up their eyes. They are a true joy. We more fully understand God’s special love for children.

Each week, Mrs. Williams sends out a spreadsheet with the lessons for a week at a glance, then a reminder of daily work is in an email.

Math – Essential Question: How can you break apart a figure to find the area? Please complete pgs. 673 and 674 in your Go Math workbook. I am checking for their understanding of finding the area of combined rectangles today. I have attached the answer keys if help is needed.

Reading – Fill out the reading log with at least 20 min. of reading today. In addition to reading 20 minutes of a book of their choice, please do the reading comprehension page Veterans Day provided in your packet. 
First, read the passage.
Second, complete Vocabulary Practice. Remember that synonym means “same meaning” and antonym means “opposite meaning.” For carved, a synonym would be cut because the two words have the same meaning. For carved, an antonym would be bonded because the two words have the opposite meaning.
Third, complete Comprehension Practice. You do not need to restate because of the small space provided.
Lastly, complete Think and Respond with at least 3-4 sentences.
If time allows, listen and watch read
English – I sent the rough drafts back to you individually with corrections and comments. Please take a look and complete your final draft today.
Remember these important points…

Sra. Tippie y Sra. Williams Tercer Grado
Dándose cuenta de que cada familia del Sagrado Corazón es diferente, la Sra. Tippie y la Sra. Williams han probado varias estrategias para cubrir las necesidades de los estudiantes y padres. Por ejemplo, las lecciones de instrucción son provistas tanto por copia impresa como por documentos escaneados. De esta manera las familias que no pueden imprimir el trabajo pueden recogerlo en la oficina principal cuando le sea conveniente. Por otro lado, las familias que prefieren recibir su trabajo electrónicamente, reciben los archivos y los imprimen.
En adición, los padres tienen ambas opciones para entregar el trabajo ya sea en papel o vía electrónica. La instrucción de las maestras se completa mediante juntas en Zoom y también con lecciones de instrucción grabadas.
Hemos aprendido muchas cosas nuevas durante el aprendizaje a distancia. Sin embargo hay dos cosas que sobresalen. Una es que los padres del Sagrado Corazón son fenomenales. Lo decimos sinceramente. Ellos están tratando arduamente de motivar y ayudar a sus hijos y son los padres más comprensivos que hemos conocido. Ellos nos siguen alentando y felicitando. Estamos asombrados por su amabilidad.
La segunda cosa que hemos aprendido no es una sorpresa para nosotros. Es que la mejor parte de enseñar es estar con los estudiantes. Extrañamos ver sus rostros en la mañana. Extrañamos verlos hablar con sus amigos. Extrañamos que se tomen mucho tiempo para formarse. Extrañamos sus bromas y ver cómo se iluminan sus ojos cuando entienden el tema. Son una verdadera alegría. Entendemos a plenitud el amor especial de Dios por los niños.

Cada semana, la Sra. Williams envía una hoja de cálculo con las lecciones de la semana, luego un recordatorio diario del trabajo por email.

Matemáticas- Pregunta Principal: ¿Cómo podemos dividir en partes una figura para encontrar el área? Por favor complete las páginas 673 y 674 de su libro de trabajo Go Math. Hoy estaré revisando su comprensión para encontrar el área de rectángulos compuestos. Anexo las respuestas en caso de que necesite ayuda.

Lectura- Llene su hoja de registro de lectura con al menos 20 minutos de lectura durante el día de hoy. Además de leer por 20 minutos el libro de su elección haga la lectura de comprensión de la página del Día de los Veteranos provista en su paquete. 
Primero lea el pasaje.
Segundo, haga la práctica del vocabulario. Recuerde que el sinónimo significa “mismo significado” y antónimo significa “significado opuesto”. Para “carved” un sinónimo sería “”cut” porque estas dos palabras tienen el mismo significado. Para “carved” el antónimo sería “bonded” porque estas dos palabras tienen el significado opuesto.
Tercero, haga la práctica de comprensión. No necesita parafrasear porque no tiene suficiente espacio.
Por último, haga la sección titulada “Think and Respond” con al menos 3 o 4 enunciados.
