Dear Sacred Heart Families,

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. Spending time with my family and friends has been both relaxing and rejuvenating. I am ready to tackle the new semester and welcome everyone back to the building as soon as Mother Nature cooperates! Our primary sources for communicating any school closures or late starts will be targeted blasts, text messages, and social media.

As you know, Fr. Clever has arrived at St. Vincent de Paul and Sacred Heart School. Welcome, Fr. Clever! After meeting with him, I am convinced he is an excellent addition to our Gremlin family. He is in the process of settling in and is anxious to meet our students, families, staff, and faculty. Please introduce yourself when you see him and give him a true Sacred Heart welcome.

We are also excited to welcome Officer Andrew Bruce to our building beginning January 7th. As our SRO, his role will be large and varied. He will focus on building relationships with our Gremlin community and enhance security measures at Sacred Heart. Welcome, Officer Bruce! We are glad you’re here!

As we begin our second semester of the 24-25 school year, it is hard to believe it, but Winter Homecoming is approaching! Homecoming offers us a time to welcome dear friends back to their alma mater, but also to show our current pride in our school. We have a lot to be proud of at Sacred Heart! From the accomplishments on the field, court, and classroom to the more important spiritual gifts and service projects we bring to our greater Sedalia community. Let’s show our pride and spirit as we head into Winter Homecoming Week, which is January 13th-17th. Look for a calendar of events coming soon.

This year, Catholic Schools Week will run from January 26th to 31st. The theme is “United in Faith and Community”. During CSW, we celebrate all the things that make our Catholic school so special. Our parish, community, families, students, staff, faculty, and alumnae are all foundational blocks of our school. Without one of those pieces, Sacred Heart is not the same place.  With that said, we should all celebrate the uniqueness of our Catholic school! Help us by participating in as many of the events planned for CSW as possible! Look for a calendar of events soon!

If you have been on campus over break, you have surely noticed all of the cleaning, painting, and general spiffiness in our building! We have the best maintenance and janitorial staff to thank for it. Many parents and other stakeholders have also shown up to help get some big projects done over break. Thank you to everyone involved!

A New Year and a New Assignment

As I announced a month ago, this weekend will be my last weekend as the Associate Pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish and the Director of Faith Formation at Sacred Heart School. On Monday (weather permitting!), I will move to Jefferson City, where I will be in residence at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, but will be working full time in the Chancery – or the offices of the diocese – as Judicial Vicar and Master of Ceremonies.

 

As I prepare to leave St. Vincent de Paul Parish and Sacred Heart School, I would like to say again just how grateful I am for the time that I have been blessed to spend here. I was recently asked by some of our Sacred Heart School students to name my top five favorite memories of my time at St. Vincent de Paul Parish and Sacred Heart School. I eventually settled on the following list: going to NCYC with students from Sacred Heart in November of 2023, right after I moved here; going to Oklahoma City for the Sacred Heart Senior Mission Trip in March of 2024; Fr. Christopher Hoffmann’s Masses of Thanksgiving and our parish celebrations after his priestly ordination in June of 2024; the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage coming through St. Vincent de Paul Parish in July of 2024; and the Eucharistic Procession through Sacred Heart School and Adoration Under the Stars at the Homecoming game in September and October of 2024. (Ok, I cheated a little bit — that’s technically more than five!)

 

I hope that, in some small way, during my time here at St. Vincent de Paul Parish and Sacred Heart School, I have helped our students to know Jesus and His love for them a little bit better. For the times when I have perhaps failed to do so adequately, and for any occasions on which I created an obstacle to the building up of the Kingdom, I ask your forgiveness. I pray that our students will never be afraid to live out their Christian faith courageously and respond to God’s call generously. I would ask that you continue to pray for me, for the priests assigned to ministry here in Pettis County, and for a generous response to vocations to the priesthood from our diocese and from St. Vincent de Paul Parish and Sacred Heart School.

Hi, my name is Fr. Clever, and I just got assigned to help out as the associate pastor here at St. Vincent de Paul parish. As a part of which, I will be assisting at Sacred Heart School. As such, I would like to let all of you know a bit about me as I begin my time here at the school.

I was born and raised in sunny St. Charles, Missouri, the third of nine siblings to Dr. Henry and Mrs. Dorothy Clever. We attended St. Joseph’s Church, and I attended high school at De Smet Jesuit High School in Creve Coeur, Missouri. Upon graduation, I entered into seminary and went to Kenrick-Glennon Seminary for 7 years.

After a period of discernment, I left the seminary for two years at that time. During those two years off of seminary I was a science and religion teacher at Sacred Heart in Valley Park, Missouri. While that was a very fulfilling experience for me, I began to feel the call to return to seminary, and as a result I reentered seminary as a seminarian for the Diocese of Jefferson City.

I finished out the remainder of my time at Mundelein Seminary in Northwest Chicago. Once I graduated from seminary I was ordained to the diaconate on June 1st and was assigned to Helias Catholic High School, where I was this fall. On December 7th, I was ordained to the priesthood and was reassigned to St. Vincent de Paul parish here in Sedalia.

In my spiritual life, I have devotions to Sts. Gregory, Joseph, and John, and a particular devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows. The Shrine to Our Lady of Sorrows out in Starkenburg near Hermann, MO holds a particularly special place in my heart as it is where I truly found, and Mary protected my vocation.

In my personal life, I have a variety of interests from pretty much anything related to watching and playing sports, to the outdoors, to board games, to reading, to grilling. In particular I am a Cardinals, Blues, and Battlehawks fan when it comes to professional sports.

In closing for my introduction, I would ask that all of you please pray for me that I would be the holy priest Jesus desires me to be, and please know of my prayers for all of you. I am very excited to get to know and to serve all of you here in our wonderful school community!

In Catholic news for The Beat: the feast of the Epiphany is coming up this weekend; celebrating the arrival of the three kings with their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. I think it is important with this feast to remember that those gifts are not mere historical gifts that were once given to Christ in the past, but are gifts we still have the opportunity to offer Christ. In our case, we can offer to him the gold of our good works, the frankincense of our prayers, and the myrrh of our sufferings, gifts that are even more valuable to our newborn Savior than the original three gifts, good as they were.

Lastly: due to the anticipated winter weather storm this weekend, the farewell reception for Fr. Berhorst has been cancelled. Instead, all of you are invited to come by the Sacred Heart Rectory this Sunday (1/5) from 1:00-3:00 pm where Fr. Berhorst will welcome guests.

Epiphany House Blessing

Sunday, January 5th, is the Feast Day of the Epiphany of the Lord. During this season “chalking the door” is a centuries-old Christian custom to ask God’s blessing on your home for the new year. As we begin this new year, we invite you to “chalk your door” and recite this prayer of blessing for your home.

20 + C + M + B + 25

The “20” and “25” refer to the year. The “+” between the letters symbolizes the cross of Christ. The “C M B” initials have two meanings:

1. The initials represent the three Magi: Casper, Melchior and Balthazar.

2. Also, the initials abbreviate the Latin “Christus mansionem benedict” (May Christ bless this house).

God of Light, bless our home. Make it a haven of rest for all in need of your warmth and care. When we leave from this place, may we never lose sight of Christ’s light. We mark our door with the symbol of blessing. May all who enter here find love and light, for Christ dwells in this home and in these hearts. Amen

Estimadas familias del Sagrado Corazón:

 

Espero que todos hayan tenido una maravillosa Navidad y Año Nuevo. Pasar tiempo con mi familia y amigos ha sido relajante y rejuvenecedor. ¡Estoy lista para afrontar el nuevo semestre y darles la bienvenida a todos al edificio tan pronto como la Madre Naturaleza coopere! Nuestras principales fuentes para comunicar cualquier cierre de escuelas o inicios tardíos serán mensajes de texto automáticos, mensajes de texto comunes y las redes sociales.

 

Como saben, el padre Clever ha llegado a St. Vincent de Paul y la Escuela del Sagrado Corazón. ¡Bienvenido, padre Clever! Después de reunirme con él, estoy convencida de que es una excelente incorporación a nuestra familia Gremlin. Está en proceso de adaptarse y está ansioso por conocer a nuestros estudiantes, familias, personal y profesores. Preséntese cuando lo vea y dele una verdadera bienvenida de Sagrado Corazón.

Si ha estado en el campus durante las vacaciones, seguramente habrá notado toda la limpieza, pintura y limpieza general de nuestro edificio. Un nuevo año y un nuevo cargo

Como anuncié hace un mes, este fin de semana es mi último fin de semana como vicario parroquial de la parroquia de San Vicente de Paúl y director de formación en la fe de la Escuela Sagrado Corazón. El lunes (¡si el clima lo permite!) me mudaré a Jefferson City, donde residiré en la rectoría de la Catedral de San José, pero trabajaré a tiempo completo en la Cancillería – o las oficinas de la diócesis – como vicario judicial y maestro de ceremonias.

Mientras me preparo para dejar la parroquia de San Vicente de Paúl y la Escuela Sagrado Corazón, me gustaría decir otra vez lo agradecido que estoy por el tiempo que he tenido la bendición de pasar aquí. Recientemente, algunos de los estudiantes de la Escuela Sagrado Corazón me pidieron que nombrara mis cinco recuerdos favoritos de mi tiempo en la parroquia y nuestra escuela. Finalmente, me decidí por la siguiente lista: ir a NCYC con estudiantes del Sagrado Corazón en noviembre de 2023 poco después de mudarme aquí; ir a Oklahoma City para el viaje de misión de los estudiantes del duodécimo grado del Sagrado Corazón en marzo de 2024; las misas de Acción de Gracias del padre Christopher Hoffmann y nuestras celebraciones parroquiales después de su ordenación sacerdotal en junio de 2024; la Peregrinación Eucarística Nacional que pasó por la parroquia San Vicente de Paúl en julio de 2024; y la Procesión Eucarística por la Escuela Sagrado Corazón y la Adoración bajo las estrellas en el juego de Homecoming en septiembre y octubre de 2024.

Espero que de alguna pequeña manera durante mi tiempo aquí en la Parroquia San Vicente de Paúl y la Escuela del Sagrado Corazón haya ayudado a nuestros estudiantes a conocer un poco mejor a Jesús y su amor por ellos. Por las ocasiones en las que no lo he hecho adecuadamente y por las ocasiones en las que he creado un obstáculo para la edificación del Reino de Dios, pido perdón. Rezo para que nuestros estudiantes nunca tengan miedo de vivir su fe cristiana con valentía y responder al llamado de Dios con generosidad. Les pido que sigan rezando por mí, por los sacerdotes asignados al ministerio en el condado de Pettis y por una respuesta generosa a las vocaciones al sacerdocio en nuestra diócesis y en la parroquia de San Vicente de Paúl y la Escuela Sagrado Corazón.

Hola, me llamo Padre Clever y me acaban de asignar para ayudar como Vicario Parroquial aquí en la parroquia de San Vicente de Paúl. Como parte de esto, ayudaré en la Escuela del Sagrado Corazón. Como tal, me gustaría que todos ustedes sepan un poco sobre mí mientras comienzo mi tiempo aquí en la escuela.

Nací y crecí en la soleada St. Charles, Missouri, el tercero de nueve hermanos y mis padres son Dr. Henry y Sra. Dorothy Clever. Asistimos a la Iglesia de San José y asistí a la escuela secundaria en De Smet Jesuit High School en Creve Coeur, Missouri. Después de graduarme, entré al seminario y fui al Seminario Kenrick-Glennon durante 7 años.

Después de un período de discernimiento, dejé el seminario durante dos años en ese momento. Durante esos dos años fuera del seminario, fui profesor de ciencias y religión en Sacred Heart en Valley Park, Missouri. Aunque esa fue una experiencia muy satisfactoria para mí, comencé a sentir el llamado a regresar al seminario y, como resultado, volví a ingresar al seminario como seminarista de la Diócesis de Jefferson City.

El Santuario de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores en Starkenburg, cerca de Hermann, MO, tiene un lugar particularmente especial en mi corazón, ya que es donde realmente encontré y María protegió mi vocación.

En mi vida personal, tengo una variedad de intereses, desde casi todo lo relacionado con ver y practicar deportes, hasta actividades al aire libre, juegos de mesa, lectura y parrilladas. En particular, soy fanático de los Cardinals, Blues y Battlehawks cuando se trata de deportes profesionales.

Para cerrar mi presentación, me gustaría pedirles a todos que rezen por mí para que sea el santo sacerdote que Jesús desea que sea, y sepan que rezo por todos ustedes. ¡Estoy muy emocionado de conocerlos y servirlos a todos aquí en nuestra maravillosa comunidad escolar!

En noticias católicas para The Beat: la fiesta de la Epifanía se acerca este fin de semana; celebramos la llegada de los tres reyes con sus regalos de oro, incienso y mirra. Creo que es importante con esta fiesta recordar que esos regalos no son meros regalos históricos que alguna vez se le dieron a Cristo en el pasado, sino regalos que aún tenemos la oportunidad de ofrecerle a Cristo. En nuestro caso, podemos ofrecerle el oro de nuestras buenas obras, el incienso de nuestras oraciones y la mirra de nuestros sufrimientos, dones que son aún más valiosos para nuestro Salvador recién nacido que los tres dones originales, por buenos que fueran.

Por último: debido a la tormenta invernal prevista para este fin de semana, se ha cancelado la recepción de despedida del padre Berhorst. En su lugar, todos están invitados a pasar por la rectoría del Sagrado Corazón este domingo (5 de enero) de 13:00 a 15:00 horas, donde el padre Berhorst dará la bienvenida a los invitados.

Bendición de la Casa para la Epifanía

El domingo 5 de enero es la festividad de la Epifanía del Señor. Durante esta temporada, “marcar la puerta con tiza” es una costumbre cristiana de siglos de antigüedad para pedirle a Dios la bendición de su hogar para el nuevo año. Al comenzar este nuevo año, lo invitamos a “marcar la puerta con tiza” y recitar esta oración de bendición para su hogar.

20 + C + M + B + 25

El “20” y el “25” se refieren al año. El “+” entre las letras simboliza la cruz de Cristo. Las iniciales “C M B” tienen dos significados:

1. Las iniciales representan a los tres Reyes Magos: Gaspar, Melchor y Baltasar.

2. Además, las iniciales abrevian la palabra latina “Christus mansionem benedict” (Que Cristo bendiga esta casa).

Oración de bendición

Dios de la Luz, bendice nuestro hogar. Haz que sea un refugio de descanso para todos los que necesitan tu calor y cuidado. Que al salir de este lugar no perdamos nunca de vista la luz de Cristo.
