Dear Sacred Heart Families,
As we wrap up our first semester and 2024, let me say again how grateful I am that you are part of the Gremlin Family. Together, our students, parents, faculty, alumni, and all of the friends of Sacred Heart are what make our school special. The variety of talents so many of you share with us does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. YOU are what helps our school succeed, and I thank God every day for our Gremlin community.
Starting today, we will be streamlining our communications with you. We value your time, and we want to simplify where you find the information you need. “The Beat” will only be sent out once a week on Fridays. We value your input, so if we do not meet your communication expectations, feel free to let me know.
Our Christmas Eve Meal for Those in Need is around the corner, and we need your help! At Thanksgiving, we served 1,200 meals for those in need, and we are anticipating the same turnout for Christmas. When we answer the call of Jesus by helping to feed our less fortunate neighbors, we not only grow closer to God, but we also model for our children the beauty of service. Our annual “Follow the Star” concert is this Sunday, December 8th at 7:00 pm in the Sacred Heart Chapel. Our Elementary Christmas Concert will be on Friday, December 13th at 6:30 pm in the McGremlin Gym. Please plan to attend either or both if your schedule allows. They are both sure to keep us in the mood of waiting and preparation as we continue through this season of Advent. Advent
It is hard to believe that we are already most of the way through this first week of Advent! But we have been busy here at Sacred Heart, preparing to celebrate Christ’s first coming at Christmas, and preparing our hearts for His second coming in glory.
Weekly Advent Prayer Services at Sacred Heart School
On Wednesday afternoon, the entire school gathered in the McGremlin Gym for the blessing of our Advent Wreath. The lighting of the four candles of the Advent Wreath marks the passing of the four weeks of Advent, and the light of the candles reminds us that Christ is the light of the world. As we light the candles each week, we ask Christ to dispel in us the darkness of sin and death. Purple is a color long associated with kings and royalty, and as the liturgical color of the season of Advent, the purple candles of the wreath remind us that Jesus, whose coming we await, truly is our King.
The first candle on the Advent wreath represents Hope – the first Sunday of Advent not only leads us to anticipate the birth of Christ but celebrate the beginning of a new liturgical season as well. Sometimes called the “Prophecy Candle,” the first candle harkens us back to Isaiah’s foretelling of the birth of Christ and all of the promises God gave us in the Old Testament that would be fulfilled by the birth of Jesus.
Advent Reconciliation at Sacred Heart School
In the Catholic Church, purple is also used as the liturgical color for penance, and Advent – although differently than Lent – is a penitential season. One of the ways that we respond to the invitation to prepare our hearts for Jesus’ coming is to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance or Reconciliation. This Wednesday and Thursday, all of our third through twelfth grade students had the opportunity to spend some time in Sacred Heart Chapel, where Fr. Joe and I were available to hear confessions, and to offer prayers and blessings for our non-Catholic students, as well.
Advent Parish Penance Service
Speaking of the Sacrament of Penance, the St. Vincent de Paul Parish Advent Penance service will be Sunday, December 15th at 4:00pm at St. Patrick Chapel. Ten priests will be available to hear confessions, including several Spanish-speaking priests. Making a good confession is a great way to prepare for the coming feasts of Christmas.
The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
The Catholic Church ordinarily celebrates the Immaculate Conception of Mary each year on December 8th. This year, because we will celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent on that date, we observe the Immaculate Conception on the following day, Monday, December 9th. Bishop McKnight has dispensed all Catholics in the Diocese of Jefferson City from the obligation to attend Mass that day, but even though it’s not “of obligation,” it is still a great holy day!
The word macula is Latin for stain. Consequently, immaculate means “without stain.” On this holy day, we celebrate the fact that Mary was conceived without Original Sin. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains (no. 491): “The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of Almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin.” As Catholics, we do not believe that Mary somehow did not need redemption. Rather, we believe that God chose to redeem His mother in a totally unique way!
Here at St. Vincent de Paul, we will celebrate the following Masses for the Immaculate Conception on Monday, December 9th:

Armor of God – 3rd Grade
Sacred Heart School uses the Armor of God program to introduce our students to new forms of prayer and various sacramentals of the Church each year over the course of their time with us, from the 1st grade through the 12th grade.
The Brown Scapular
Next Tuesday, December 10th, our third-grade students will receive the Brown Scapular as the next piece of their Armor of God. The Brown Scapular is worn as a sign of devotion to Mary, the Mother of God. Historically, a scapular was a kind of work apron worn especially by religious men and women consisting of two pieces of cloth worn front and back, joined over the shoulders. It still forms a normal part of the habit (or clothes) of many religious orders, including the Carmelites. Our Catholic tradition tells us that the Brown Scapular was revealed by Our Lady to St. Simon Stock, who was head of the Carmelite Order in the 13th century.
We should not think of the scapular as a kind of amulet or magic item, assuring us of salvation no matter how we choose to live, but rather as a sign of our commitment to living the Christian life and of daily prayer and acts of charity, following the example that Mary gave us as Jesus’ greatest disciple, and asking for her prayers to assist us in boldly living our Christian faith.
The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
On December 12th, the Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This title is associated with Mary from a series of apparitions to Saint Juan Diego that occurred on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico in 1531. Under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mary is also known as Empress of the Americas, Patron of Latin America, and Queen of Mexico.
Here at St. Vincent de Paul Parish, in addition to the novena leading up to December 12th, we will celebrate with a whole program of festivities at St. Patrick Chapel on the day of the feast itself, to which all are invited:
To celebrate this important feast, the entire student body will also gather for an all-school Mass at 8:30am at Sacred Heart Chapel.

¡Es difícil creer que ya hemos recorrido la mayor parte de esta primera semana de Adviento! Pero hemos estado ocupados aquí en Sacred Heart, preparándonos para celebrar la primera venida de Cristo en Navidad y preparando nuestros corazones para Su segunda venida en gloria.
Servicios semanales de oración de Adviento en la escuela Sacred Heart
El miércoles por la tarde, toda la escuela se reunió en el gimnasio McGremlin para la bendición de nuestra corona de Adviento. El encendido de las cuatro velas de la corona de Adviento marca las cuatro semanas de Adviento, y la luz de las velas nos recuerda que Cristo es la luz del mundo. Al encender las velas cada semana, le pedimos a Cristo que disipe en nosotros la oscuridad del pecado y la muerte. El morado es un color asociado desde hace mucho tiempo con los reyes y la realeza, y como el color litúrgico del tiempo de Adviento, las velas moradas de la corona nos recuerdan que Jesús, cuya venida esperamos, es verdaderamente nuestro Rey.
La primera vela de la corona de Adviento representa la esperanza: el primer domingo de Adviento no solo nos lleva a anticipar el nacimiento de Cristo, sino también a celebrar el comienzo de una nueva temporada litúrgica. A veces llamada la “Vela de la Profecía”, la primera vela nos recuerda la predicción de Isaías sobre el nacimiento de Cristo y todas las promesas que Dios nos dio en el Antiguo Testamento que se cumplirían con el nacimiento de Jesús.
Reconciliación de Adviento en la Escuela del Sagrado Corazón
En la Iglesia Católica, el morado también se usa como el color litúrgico para la penitencia, y el Adviento, aunque de manera diferente a la Cuaresma, es una temporada penitencial. Una de las formas en que respondemos a la invitación a preparar nuestros corazones para la venida de Jesús es celebrar el Sacramento de la Penitencia o Reconciliación. Este miércoles y jueves, todos nuestros estudiantes de tercero a duodécimo grado tuvieron la oportunidad de pasar un tiempo en la Capilla del Sagrado Corazón, donde el Padre Joe y yo estuvimos disponibles para escuchar confesiones y ofrecer oraciones y bendiciones para nuestros estudiantes no católicos también.
Servicio de Penitencia de Adviento en la Parroquia de San Vicente de Paúl
Hablando del Sacramento de la Penitencia, el servicio de Penitencia de Adviento en la Parroquia de San Vicente de Paúl será el domingo 15 de diciembre a las 4:00 p. m. en la Capilla de San Patricio. Diez sacerdotes estarán disponibles para escuchar confesiones, incluidos varios sacerdotes que hablan español. Hacer una buena confesión es una excelente manera de prepararse para las próximas fiestas de Navidad.
Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción
La Iglesia Católica celebra ordinariamente la Inmaculada Concepción de María cada año el 8 de diciembre. Este año, debido a que celebraremos el Segundo Domingo de Adviento en esa fecha, observamos la Inmaculada Concepción al día siguiente, lunes 9 de diciembre. El obispo McKnight ha dispensado a todos los católicos de la Diócesis de Jefferson City de la obligación de asistir a Misa ese día, pero aunque no es “de precepto”, ¡sigue siendo una grande solemnidad!
La palabra macula en latín significa “mancha”. En consecuencia, inmaculado
Aquí en la parroquia San Vicente de Paúl, celebraremos las siguientes Misas para la Inmaculada Concepción el lunes 9 de diciembre:

Armadura de Dios – 3er grado
La Escuela del Sagrado Corazón usa el programa Armadura de Dios para presentarles a nuestros estudiantes nuevas formas de oración y varios sacramentales de la Iglesia cada año durante el tiempo que están con nosotros, desde el 1er grado hasta el 12do grado.
El Escapulario Marrón
El próximo martes 10 de diciembre, nuestros estudiantes de tercer grado recibirán el Escapulario Marrón como la siguiente pieza de su Armadura de Dios. El Escapulario Marrón se usa como un signo de devoción a María, la Madre de Dios. Históricamente, un escapulario era una especie de delantal de trabajo que usaban especialmente los hombres y mujeres religiosos y que consistía en dos piezas de tela que se usaban por delante y por detrás, unidas sobre los hombros. Todavía forma parte normal del hábito (o vestimenta) de muchas órdenes religiosas, incluidas las Carmelitas. Nuestra tradición católica nos dice que el Escapulario Marrón fue revelado por Nuestra Señora a San Simón Stock, quien fue jefe de la Orden Carmelita en el siglo XIII.
No debemos pensar en el escapulario como una especie de amuleto o elemento mágico, que nos asegura la salvación sin importar cómo elijamos vivir, sino más bien como un signo de nuestro compromiso de vivir la vida cristiana y de la oración diaria y los actos de caridad, siguiendo el ejemplo que María nos dio como la discípula más grande de Jesús, y pidiendo sus oraciones para ayudarnos a vivir con valentía nuestra vida cristiana.
La Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
El 12 de diciembre, la Iglesia celebra la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Esta advocación está asociada a María a partir de una serie de apariciones a San Juan Diego que ocurrieron en el cerro del Tepeyac en México en 1531. Bajo la advocación de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, María también es conocida como Emperatriz de las Américas, Patrona de América Latina y Reina de México.
Aquí en la Parroquia San Vicente de Paúl, además de la novena previa al 12 de diciembre, celebraremos con todo un programa de festividades en la Capilla San Patricio el mismo día de la festividad, al que todos están invitados:
Para celebrar esta importante fiesta, todo el alumnado también se reunirá para una Misa de todo el colegio a las 8:30am en la Capilla del Sagrado Corazón.
