Good Afternoon SHS Families,
As of this writing, there are only three more weeks of new instruction remaining before we close out the 2019-2020 school year. The last week of school, May 18 through the 22nd will be designated to wrapping up all those loose ends that will assist the students in finalizing grades they can be proud of for the 4th quarter and 2nd semester of this year. One thing for sure, I don’t think this is a school year we will soon forget!
We are continuing today in our series highlighting the work of SHS faculty members. Today we will be showing you how Ms. Hegger and Mrs. McDonald continue to meaningfully engage our 4th and 5th-grade students in these educationally challenging times!
Something that the pandemic has allowed us to do is get a head start on maintenance projects and capital improvements. We are sharing some pictures in today’s Beat to give you an idea of just a few of the improvements to the physical plant that you can look forward to when the kids return in the fall!

4th Quarter Grades and Grade Cards (2019-2020)
As many of you saw in last week’s Beat, Sacred Heart recently received a video communication from our Interim Superintendent, Ms. Kenya Fuemmeler, outlining the academic plan for 4th Quarter grades. Under diocesan direction, no finals will be given for the Spring Semester. The exception will be any finals required for Dual-Credit classes. Teachers are allowed to give chapter/unit tests, but these exams will not be cumulative in nature.
Additionally, the weighting for the quarters will be adjusted through FACTS. The Dioceses has asked that the 3rd quarter be weighted as 60% of the semester grade and 4th quarter be adjusted to 40% of the semester grade. This means that the addition of an extra 10% weight to the 3rd quarter will NOT change these previously reported grades, but will assign the additional weight to the semester grade. These changes will be calculated by FACTS as the percentages are changed by our counselor Mrs. Buckley.
Ms. Fuemmeler, in her video, also communicated plans for the end of the year schedule. Sacred Heart Schools will end the introduction of new content on May 15th. May 18th through May 22nd will be used for reteaching and remediation for students who struggled during 4th quarter. During this week, students will receive individual instruction from teachers and be allowed to complete additional assignments to help them get their grades where they should be for the 4th Quarter. Students who are not in need of remediation will complete their classes on May 15th.
Final grades will be emailed home on the 28th of May. Please make sure you have worked with the school office to have all financial obligations for 2019-2020 (including lunches, fines, books and uniforms, etc.) taken care of prior to the release of final report cards.

Distance Learning With SHS 4th & 5th Graders
Hello SHS!
Learning has taken on a whole new look in Mrs. Hegger and Mrs. McDonald’s 4th and 5th grade! Distance Learning has challenged both of us to come up with new & alternative methods for the students to allow them to continue with their education.
Like most other grades, the 4th and 5th grade has moved to using Google Classroom to submit most of their assignments. This has helped the children grow as independent learners. Many parents have given the feedback that they appreciate a format that their child can maneuver and that the parents see their children growing in educational maturity and computer skills.
Through the magic of Zoom, both teachers are able to connect with their students daily. This allows them to continue instruction, interact with their students and gives the students the opportunity to ask questions.
Mrs. Heggar is using her Zoom sessions to have interactive Math and Science lessons and Mrs. McDonald and her students zoom, having book discussions and English lessons.
After a few hiccups, 4th and 5th-grade students and parents have become masters of Google Classroom. Mrs. Hegger and Mrs. McDonald post their assignments in Google Classroom each day. Students are keeping track of, completing, and turning in their assignments daily and are doing it fabulously!
The 5th grade also did an amazing job of improvising when it came to this year’s Living Museum (see below). It became an extra credit project and many of them made a video and submitted it as an alternative to the live museum. They turned out wonderfully!!!
We are really appreciative that Mrs. Howell has taught the students how to use Google Classroom in their computer classes for the past two years. Mrs. Siron provides support to parents and students by email, and by giving lessons to those parents and students that needed extra assistance. Thank you, Mrs. Siron! Most of all, we are both so grateful for the patience, support, and perseverance of all of the 4th and 5th-grade parents. Our parents deserve a HUGE pat on the back! Mrs. Hegger & Mrs. McDonald

Senior 2020 Highlights
Hannah McDonald
Hannah is headed to Missouri State University in the fall to study finance. She wants to follow in her Dad’s footsteps. She feels like this career is all about helping people, which is where her interests lie. Hannah said she will miss her friends at Sacred Heart and her family most of all, but is ready to start the next chapter of her life. She is excited to attend Mo State’s orientation this summer. She said she has everything completed and is ready to go with the exception of knowing how to do her own laundry, she is depending on a crash course before she goes.
Maia Smith
Maia will be attending Kansas State University in the fall. She will major in interior architectural design. Maia credits her passion for interior design to her grandmother. She has many fond memories of decorating for the holidays with her as well as tackling home redecorating projects. Maia will miss being a part of the track team at Sacred Heart, and seeing her friends every day, but is determined to stay in touch. She plans on getting involved in athletics at K State, maybe joining a recreational track or soccer team. She is excited to start taking classes that will teach her about her future career. When asked about stressors she foresees, Maia said she hopes to be good at time management and getting enough alone time. This can be a challenge living in the dorms.
Drew Smith
Drew will be attending State Fair Community College this fall. He will be continuing on to Missouri S&T to major in aerospace engineering. Drew remembers going to the Missouri State Fair as a child and visiting a booth that explained how airplanes are designed. He was immediately fascinated and has wanted to pursue this as a career ever since. Drew said he will miss his teachers at Sacred Heart. He does not feel prepared for college, he says it feels like such a huge change, a big step! He is, however, excited about this big step and meeting new people along the way.
SHS Facilities Upgrades in Spring 2020!
Art Room Backsplash….
Kudos to Betsy Gerke on the installation of the backsplash tile in the Art Room. Betsy is our cafeteria director but has joined the maintenance staff since school has not been in session. She did a wonderful job with this Art Room improvement. Please stop by Mrs. Kehl’s room and check it out next time you are in the building!
Playground project off and rolling…..
Project foreman Mardy Hostetler has begun the playground project we have all been looking so forward to! The sweetgum trees have been removed and the brush hauled off. We are in the process of getting the pea gravel taken away and ground prep for pouring concrete is right around the corner.
Can’t wait to watch this long-overdue project continues to take shape!
Cafeteria overhaul……
Mr. Freels and the maintenance department have taken the opportunity of a few extra weeks of school being out of session (at least on site) to give the cafeteria a facelift! It is getting a fresh coat of paint along with the floor being stripped and waxed. The crew is even bringing the ceiling tiles back to a bright white.
Within the next week or so it will be ready for summer daycare to set up shop in a bright and shiny space. Well done maintenance gang!

Buenas tardes familias del SHS,
A partir de hoy, quedan solo tres semanas más de instrucción de material nuevo antes de que cerremos el ciclo escolar 2019-2020. La última semana de clases, del 18 al 22 de mayo estará designada para finalizar los pendientes que ayudarán a los estudiantes a terminar con calificaciones de las que puedan sentirse orgullosos en el 4o trimestre y 2o semestre de este año. Una cosa es segura, no creo que este año escolar sea uno que olvidaremos pronto.
Vamos a continuar hoy con nuestras series para resaltar el trabajo de personal docente del SHS. ¡Hoy estaremos mostrando cómo la Sra. Hegger y la Sra McDonald continúan involucrando de forma significativa a los estudiantes de 4o y 5o grado en estos momentos educativamente desafiantes!
Algo que la pandemia nos ha permitido hacer es comenzar los proyectos de mantenimiento y mejoras de capital. ¡Le estamos compartiendo unas fotos en el Beat de hoy para darle una idea de unas cuantas mejoras a la planta física que podrá ver cuando los niños regresen en el otoño.!

Calificaciones del 4o Trimestre y Reportes de Calificaciones (2019-2020)
Como muchos de ustedes vieron en el Beat de la semana pasada, el Sagrado Corazón recientemente recibió un comunicado en video de parte de nuestra Superintendente Provisional la Sra. Kenya Fuemmeler, describiendo el plan académico para las calificaciones del 4o trimestre. Bajo la dirección de la diócesis, no se aplicarán exámenes finales para el semestre de primavera. La excepción serán los exámenes finales requeridos para las clases de crédito dual. Los maestros tienen permitido aplicar exámenes de capítulo/unidad, pero estos exámenes no será de naturaleza acumulativa.
En adición, la ponderación de los trimestres será ajustada mediante FACTS. La Diócesis ha pedido que el 3er trimestre sea ponderado como el 60% de la calificación del semestre y que el 4o trimestre sea ajustado al 40% de la calificación del semestre. Esto significa que la adición del 10% adicional al peso del 3er trimestre NO cambia las calificaciones previamente informadas, pero asignará peso adicional a la calificación del semestre. Estos cambios serán calculados por FACTS conforme la consejera, Sra. Buckley cambie los los porcentajes.
La Sra. Fuemmeler, in her video, en su video también comunicó los planes para terminar el calendario escolar. La Escuela del Sagrado Corazón terminará la introducción de contenido nuevo el 15 de mayo. La semana del 18 al 22 de mayo se utilizará para volver a enseñar y para remediar a los estudiantes que tuvieron dificultades durante el 4o trimestre. Durante esta semana, los estudiantes recibirán instrucción individual de los maestros y se les permitirá completar trabajos adicionales para ayudarlos a llevar sus calificaciones a donde deberían estar para el 4o trimestre. Los estudiantes que no necesiten plan de remediación, terminarán sus clases el 15 de mayo.
Las calificaciones finales se enviarán por email el 28 de mayo. Por favor asegúrese de que haya cubierto sus obligaciones financieras del 2019-2020 (incluyendo almuerzos, multas, libros y uniformes, etc) antes de que se liberen los reportes de calificaciones.

Aprendizaje a Distancia con los Alumnos de 4o y 5o Grado
¡Hola SHS!
¡El aprendizaje ha tomado un aspecto completamente nuevo en el 4o y 5o grado de la Sra. Hegger y de la Sra. McDonald! El aprendizaje a distancia nos ha desafiado a ambas para idear métodos y alternativas nuevas para permitir a los estudiantes continuar con su educación.
Como la mayoría de los otros grados, 4o y 5o grado han cambiado a usar Google Classroom para enviar la mayor parte de sus trabajos. Esto ha ayudado a los niños a crecer como aprendices independientes. Muchos padres han provisto como retroalimentación que aprecian un formato en el que sus hijos puedan maniobrar y en el que los padres vean a sus hijos crecer en madurez educativa y en habilidades computacionales.
Mediante la magia de Zoom, ambas maestras han podido conectarse con los estudiantes de forma diaria. Esto les permite la instrucción continua, interactuar con sus estudiantes y les da a los estudiantes la oportunidad de hacer preguntas.
La Sra. Hegger está usando las sesiones de Zoom para tener lecciones interactivas de Matemáticas y Ciencia y la Sra. McDonald y sus estudiantes tienen Zoom para tener discusiones sobre el libro y lecciones de Inglés.
Después de unos cuantos tropiezos, los estudiantes de 4o y 5o grado y los padres se han convertido en expertos en Google Classroom. La Sra. Hegger y la Sra. McDonald publican sus trabajos en Google Classroom de forma diaria. ¡Los estudiantes dan seguimiento, completan y entregan sus trabajos diariamente y lo están haciendo fabulosamente!
El grupo de 5o grado también hizo un trabajo maravilloso al improvisar en cuanto al Museo Viviente de este año (ver abajo). Este se convirtió en un proyecto con crédito extra y muchos de los estudiantes hicieron un video y lo entregaron como alternativa al museo viviente. ¡Quedaron maravillosos!
Verdaderamente apreciamos que la Sra. Howell haya enseñado a los estudiantes cómo usar Google Classroom en sus clases de computación en los últimos dos años. La Sra. Siron proporciona apoyo a los padres y a los estudiantes vía email y también dando lecciones a los padres y estudiantes que necesitan asistencia adicional. ¡Gracias Sra. Siron! Pero sobre todo estamos muy agradecidas por la paciencia, apoyo y perseverancia de todos los padres de 4o y 5o grado. ¡Nuestros padres merecen una ENORME felicitación!

Aspectos Sobresalientes de los Seniors 2020
Hannah McDonald
Hannah irá a la Universidad del Estado de Missouri este otoño para estudiar Finanzas. Ella quiere seguir los pasos de su papá. Siente que esta carrera se trata de ayudar a las personas, que es donde residen sus intereses. Hannah dijo que extrañará a sus amigos del Sagrado Corazón y más que nada a su familia, pero está lista para el siguiente capítulo de su vida. Está emocionada por asistir a la orientación de la Universidad de MO este verano. Dijo que tiene todo completo y listo para ir con al excepción de saber como lavar su ropa, ella depende de un curso intensivo antes de irse.
Maia Smith
Maia asistirá a la Universidad del Estado de Kansas en el otoño. Ella se especializará en diseño de arquitectura interior. Maia acredita su pasión por el diseño interior a su abuela. Ella tiene muchos buenos recuerdos de decorar con ella para las celebraciones así como de abordar proyectos de remodelación del hogar. Maia extrañará ser parte del equipo de atletismo del Sagrado Corazón y ver a sus amigos todos los días, pero está decidida a permanecer en contacto. Planea involucrarse en deportes en la Universidad de Kansas, tal vez se una al atletismo equipo de fútbol recreativo. Está emocionada por comenzar a tomar clases que le enseñarán sobre su futura carrera. Cuando se le preguntó sobre los factores estresantes que prevé, Maia dijo que espera ser buena administradora del tiempo y tener tiempo para ella misma. Esto puede ser un desafío viviendo en los dormitorios.
Drew Smith
Drew asistirá al SFCC este verano. El continuará sus estudios en la Universidad de Ciencia y Tecnología de Missouri para especializarse en ingeniería aeroespacial. Drew recuerda ir a la Feria Estatal de Missouri de niño y visitar un puesto que explicaba cómo se diseñan los aviones. Inmediatamente quedó fascinado y desde ese entonces quiso perseguir esto como su carrera. Drew dijo que extrañará a sus maestros del Sagrado Corazón. No se siente listo para la universidad, dice que es un cambio enorme, ¡un gran paso! Sin embargo está emocionado con este gran paso y por conocer a personas nuevas a lo largo del camino.

Instalación de Cerámica en la Pared del Salón de Arte….
Felicitaciones a Betsy Gerke por instalar la cerámica en la pared del salón de Arte. Betsy es nuestra directora de la cafetería, pero se unió al personal de mantenimiento desde que la escuela no está en sesión. Ella hizo un trabajo maravilloso con esta mejora del Salón de Arte. ¡Por favor visite el salón de la Sra. Kehl y eche un vistazo la próxima vez que esté en el edificio!
El Proyecto del Área de Juegos ha Comenzado y está en Proceso
¡El capataz del proyecto Mardy Hostetler ha comenzado el proyecto del área de juegos por el que todos hemos estado esperando! Se eliminaron los árboles de goma y se removieron los arbustos. Estamos en el proceso de quitar la gravilla y preparar el terreno para verter el concreto pronto.
¡No podemos esperar a ver cómo este proyecto atrasado toma forma!
Mejoras Cosméticas en la Cafetería…
¡El Sr. Freels y el departamento de mantenimiento han aprovechado la oportunidad de tener a la escuela fuera de sesión (al menos no en el edificio) unas cuantas semanas para darle a la cafetería una mejora cosmética! La cafetería está recibiendo una capa de pintura fresca junto con el piso que está siendo marcado con líneas y encerado. El equipo incluso está devolviendo la blancura a los recuadros del techo.
Dentro de la siguiente semana más o menos estaremos listos para que la guardería de verano se instale en un espacio brillante y luminoso. ¡Bien hecho pandilla de mantenimiento!
