Dear SHS Family,

With the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, the house to decorate and presents to wrap, it is important, as Catholics, to remember that Advent starts this Sunday, December 3.  It is a challenging season to celebrate because of the commercialism of the world in which we live.  Advent is a season of joyful expectation and a time in which we pray for and remember people who are less fortunate.  Our challenge, as Catholics, is to help our children to look beyond the materialism of Christmas and focus on spiritual preparation.

The following are a few ways in which SHS will be spending their time preparing for Christmas throughout the season of Advent.  Be sure to look for each of these projects to be celebrated in upcoming Sacred Heart Beats.

• Elementary classes are preparing blessing bags for those less fortunate

• Religion classes are making Christmas cards for local nursing home residents

• FCCLA has adopted 2 Christmas angels from the SH chapel angel tree

• Key club will be preparing stockings for military men/women away from their family

• SH choir will be showcasing their talents in various events around the Pettis County community

• NHS is hosting the annual Christmas Dinner

Saturday, December 2nd – The choir will perform at the Pettis County Courthouse. They will sing Christmas Carols from 5:40 – 6pm, and then kick-off the parade with the National Anthem at 6pm

Little Gremlins Night – Dec. 15

Bring the whole family for Little Gremlins Night! Festivities center around some exciting basketball action as our boys take on the Cole Camp Bluebirds! Little Gremlins in our daycare and preschool will receive free admission to the game and free popcorn. STUCO will have a face painting station. Kids will be invited onto the court for the National Anthem and starting lineup. A chicken dinner meal and dessert will be available for purchase. There will also be a special performance by our Cheerleaders and the Little Gremlins who attended the Cheer Clinic! It’ll be a great night for family time and fun!

Randomized Drug Testing Reminder for High School

Sacred Heart High School takes seriously its stated mission to “present students with a respectful, secure, family environment that lays the groundwork for productive Christian citizens who have a positive influence on their community today and tomorrow.” Furthermore, it is our goal to assist each and every student with the basic skills and attitudes necessary to live a full, productive, and satisfying life. To accomplish this, it is necessary to impact not only the academic, but also the social, emotional, physical, and most importantly, the spiritual growth of our students. Drug abuse is becoming more and more prevalent in the United States and seems to be becoming a problem with younger students. Consequently, SHS takes a strong, proactive stance to offer protection to students from the dangers that accompany the possession, use, or sale of illegal substances. The primary message of this policy is protection and deterrence, not detection and punishment. It is important to remember that one of the goals of SHS is to help children develop into productive adults. Young people must learn that they are accountable for their own decisions. Finally, we believe that this Substance and Abuse Prevention Policy communicates to the community that Sacred Heart School maintains a standard of values and will assist our young people in protecting their youthful innocence in combating the temptations of today’s society.

There will be random drug testing once a month, the rest of the school year, starting December through May.  All student names in grades 8-12 will be in the random selection.  Ten students will be selected each month. Administration or the school office will contact the parents of students being tested. An SHS faculty or staff member will be randomly selected for testing once a month as well. Our handbook states that Midwest Collections will be utilized however due to the importance of keeping the students at SH for testing we have partnered with Tomo Drug Testing.  They have been very professional to work with getting everything set up.  Click HERE to get more information provided by Tomo Drug Testing.

Our Lady of Guadalupe (Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe)

Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas, and just like with all other feasts of our Blessed Mother Mary, we want to come together with joy and love to show her how much we love her. She is the mother of Jesus and, consequently, the mother of God. This divine motherhood is inseparable from her motherhood with regard to the Church, and so, we call her our Mother. Like good children, we want her to see our love and devotion, knowing she would take that and help us get closer to her son, Jesus.

From December 3rd to the 11th, we would celebrate a Novena (the word novena means ninth in Spanish) as a way to get ready for the big celebration on the 12th. Make sure to check out the schedule above so you don’t miss any of the different activities.

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the NET Retreat

On Friday, December 8th, the Catholic Church celebrates the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The word “macula” is Latin for stain. Consequently, “immaculate” means without stain. On this feast day, we celebrate the fact that Mary was conceived without sin. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:  “The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of Almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin” (CCC 491). It makes total sense to me that God would prepare for Himself Mother without sin, so He did. This, though, does not mean that Mary is a divinity of something between that and a human. For that reason, we don’t worship Her but venerate her, always keeping in mind that she is the Mother of God and our Mother and that we love her with all our hearts.

On that same day, December 8th, high school students will have their retreat, led by NET Ministers. The theme for this year’s retreat is “Choose Joy.” This theme might sound a little simple, considering that everybody in their right mind would always choose joy, but the thing is that, just like Saint Agustine said, only God can provide the infinite joy our hearts long for. Teenagers have a considerable challenge when it comes to finding God (Joy) in the midst of the distraction/threat social media presents to them. Anxiety and depression are at the highest historical level among youth, and it is always beneficial for them (and for us) to remember that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Please pray for the fruits of this retreat day!

Adoration Chapel Schedule Modification

In deference to the celebration leading up to and on the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we will not have XLT Adoration on December 5th. The Blessed Sacrament will still be on display from 8-9pm that night, but will be located in the Adoration Chapel. On Tuesday, December 12th Eucharistic Adoration will be at St. Patrick Chapel instead of the Adoration Chapel at Sacred Heart. If you are scheduled for an hour of adoration that day, go to St. Patrick Chapel.

Weekly Mass Back at St. John

We are happy to announce, beginning Saturday, December 2nd we will once again have weekly Mass at St. John’s. Mass will be Saturdays at 7:30pm in the St. John Community Center. Spread the word!

Concession Sign Ups Now Open!

The sign-up link for the winter sports concession stand is up and running! Get ahead of the game and sign up to work in December! I have several days that need to be filled…including a Saturday!! Each student athlete is required to work two shifts in the concession stand for the booster club. A parent is required if the student is under age 14. If a student and parent both work the same shift, then two shifts are covered, and you have met your requirement! Bonus: The student receives service hours! If the concession stand requirement is not met, your FACTS account will be charged $50. If you have any questions, contact me!!

Don’t forget we have several retailers ONLY available through the office (i.e. Casey’s, Cenex, Shell, Colton’s, Kehde’s, McD, Menards, Taco Bell, Walgreens, and VISA to name a few). Stop in at the school office on Tuesdays and Thursdays during our volunteer open hours from 9:00am – 11:00am for immediate purchases, or drop your order at the school office or email it to the program coordinator. Our volunteers will fill your order on Tuesdays and Thursdays and let you know when it’s available for pick-up. During the month of December RaiseRight will be at all Sunday Masses on December 3rd, 10th, and the 17th. Come visit our table after Mass to see what cards we have in stock. Questions? Querida familia SHS,

Con el ajetreo y el bullicio de las compras navideñas, la casa que decorar y los regalos que envolver, es importante, como Católicos, recordar que el Adviento comienza este domingo 3 de diciembre. Es una temporada desafiante para celebrar debido al comercialismo del mundo en el que vivimos. El Adviento es una temporada de expectativa gozosa y un tiempo en el que oramos y recordamos a las personas menos afortunadas. Nuestro desafío, como Católicos, es ayudar a nuestros hijos a mirar más allá del materialismo de la Navidad y centrarse en la preparación espiritual.

Recordatorio de pruebas de droga aleatorias para High School

Pruebas aleatorias de drogas High School del Sagrado Corazón toma en serio su misión declarada de “presentar a los estudiantes un ambiente familiar, seguro y respetuoso que sienta las bases para ciudadanos Cristianos productivos que tengan una influencia positiva en su comunidad hoy y mañana”. Además, nuestro objetivo es ayudar a todos y cada uno de los estudiantes con las habilidades y actitudes básicas necesarias para vivir una vida plena, productiva y satisfactoria. Para lograr esto, es necesario impactar no sólo el crecimiento académico, sino también el social, emocional, físico y lo más importante, espiritual de nuestros estudiantes. El abuso de drogas es cada vez más frecuente en los Estados Unidos y parece convertirse en un problema entre los estudiantes más jóvenes. En consecuencia, SHS adopta una postura firme y proactiva para ofrecer protección a los estudiantes de los peligros que acompañan a la posesión, uso o venta de sustancias ilegales. El mensaje principal de esta política es protección y disuasión, no detección y castigo. Es importante recordar que uno de los objetivos de SHS es ayudar a los niños a convertirse en adultos productivos. Los jóvenes deben aprender que son responsables de sus propias decisiones. Finalmente, creemos que esta Política de Prevención del Abuso y Sustancias comunica a la comunidad que la Escuela del Sagrado Corazón mantiene un estándar de valores y ayudará a nuestros jóvenes a proteger su inocencia juvenil al combatir las tentaciones de la sociedad actual.

Habrá pruebas de detección de drogas aleatorias una vez al mes durante el resto del año escolar, desde diciembre hasta mayo. Todos los nombres de los estudiantes en los grados 8-12 estarán en la selección aleatoria. Se seleccionarán diez estudiantes cada mes. La administración o la oficina de la escuela se comunicarán con los padres de los estudiantes que serán evaluados. También se seleccionará un miembro del personal de SHS para realizar la prueba una vez al mes. Nuestro manual establece que se utilizarán Midwest Collections; sin embargo, debido a la importancia de mantener a los estudiantes en SH para las pruebas, nos hemos asociado con Tomo Drug Testing. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe es la Patrona de las Américas, y al igual que con todas las demás fiestas de nuestra Santísima Madre María, queremos unirnos con alegría y amor para demostrarle cuánto la amamos. Ella es la madre de Jesús y, en consecuencia, la madre de Dios. Esta maternidad divina es inseparable de su maternidad respecto de la Iglesia, y por eso la llamamos Madre nuestra. Como buenos hijos, queremos que ella vea nuestro amor y devoción, sabiendo que ella los aprovechará y nos ayudará a acercarnos más a su hijo Jesús.

Del 3 al 11 de diciembre celebraremos una Novena como una forma de prepararnos para la gran celebración del día 12. Asegúrate de consultar el programa anterior para no perderte ninguna de las diferentes actividades.

La Fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Santísima Virgen María y el Retiro NET

            

            El viernes 8 de diciembre la Iglesia Católica celebra la Inmaculada Concepción de María. La palabra “mácula” en latín significa mancha. En consecuencia, “inmaculada” significa sin mancha. En esta fiesta celebramos el hecho de que María fue concebida sin pecado. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica afirma: “La Santísima Virgen María fue, desde el primer momento de su concepción, por singular gracia y privilegio de Dios Todopoderoso y en virtud de los méritos de Jesucristo, Salvador del género humano, preservada inmunes de toda mancha del pecado original” (CCC 491). Tiene mucho sentido para mí que Dios se preparara para Sí mismo Madre sin pecado, y así lo hizo. Sin embargo, esto no significa que María sea una divinidad o algo entre eso y un ser humano. Por eso no la adoramos sino que la veneramos, teniendo siempre presente que ella es la Madre de Dios y nuestra Madre y que la amamos con todo el corazón.

Ese mismo día, 8 de diciembre, los estudiantes de secundaria tendrán su retiro, dirigido por los Ministros NET. El tema del retiro de este año es “Elige la alegría”. Este tema puede sonar un poco simple, considerando que todo el mundo en su sano juicio elegiría siempre la alegría, pero la cuestión es que, como decía San Agustín, sólo Dios puede proporcionar la alegría infinita que nuestro corazón anhela. Los adolescentes tienen un desafío considerable cuando se trata de encontrar a Dios (el gozo) en medio de la distracción/amenaza que les presentan las redes sociales. La ansiedad y la depresión están en el nivel histórico más alto entre los jóvenes, y siempre es beneficioso para ellos (y para nosotros) recordar que Jesús es el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida. ¡Por favor oren por los frutos de este día de retiro!

Modificación del Horario de la Capilla de Adoración

En deferencia a la celebración previa y durante la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, no tendremos Adoración XLT el 5 de diciembre. El Santísimo Sacramento seguirá en exhibición de 8 a 9 p.m. esa noche, pero estará ubicado en la Capilla de la Adoración. El martes 12 de diciembre, la Adoración Eucarística será en la Capilla de San Patricio en lugar de la Capilla de Adoración del Sagrado Corazón. Si tiene programada una hora de adoración ese día, vaya a la Capilla de San Patricio.

Misa semanal en St. John

Estamos felices de anunciar que, a partir del sábado 2 de diciembre, volveremos a tener Misa semanal en St. John’s. La Misa será los sábados a las 7:30 p.m. en el Centro Comunitario St. John. ¡Compartir la palabra!

¡Las inscripciones para las concesiones ya están abiertas!

¡El enlace de registro para el puesto de concesión de deportes de invierno ya está funcionando! ¡Adelántese al juego e inscríbase para trabajar en diciembre! Tengo varios días que necesito llenar… ¡¡incluido un sábado!! Cada estudiante atleta debe trabajar dos turnos en el puesto de comida de booster club. Se requiere un padre si el estudiante es menor de 14 años. Si un estudiante y un padre trabajan en el mismo turno, entonces se cubren dos turnos y usted ha cumplido con su requisito. Bonificación: ¡El estudiante recibe horas de servicio! Si no se cumple con el requisito del puesto de comida, se le cobrará $50 a su cuenta FACTS. ¡¡Si usted tiene alguna pregunta, póngase en contacto conmigo!!
