An Earth Day Message
“The LORD God then took the man and settled him in the Garden of Eden, to cultivate and care for it.” Genesis 2:15
“For creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free form slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.” Romans 8:20-23
The website to show how USCCB is responding to Pope Francis’ document on the environment, Laudato Si, including Earth Day: https://
SHS celebrates Earth Day every day. Here are just a few ways we continue to care for God’s creation:
-
Recycling: Candles used at Mass are melted down to create new altar candles!
-
Sacred Heart Water Bottles and Tumblers: We strive to teach our students to increase their use of reusable materials. A few years ago, STUCO made Sacred Heart Water Bottles and Tumblers available to all of our students. Thanks, STUCO!
-
Water Bottle Filling Stations: A few years ago our water fountains were upgraded to refill water bottles. We have saved tens of thousands of water bottles from ending up in landfills by encouraging students to refill their bottles.
-
Gently Used Uniforms: The Gremlin Student Store features encore performances of gently used uniforms and Gremlin Gear which keeps the clothes out of landfills. One study found that extending the average life of clothes just three months per item, from 2 years and 2 months to 2 years and 5 months, would lead to a 5–10% reduction in each of the carbon, water, and waste footprints.
-
Solar Array: Come rain, come shine, come savings, come check out this link to see the daily energy benefits that are produced from our solar array. Over $22,000 has been saved since its installation in the summer of 2019!
-
Playground: Last year we re-did the surface of the playground using recycled materials. This has made it safer for our students to play on and save these materials from going to the landfill.
-
Trash Pickup: Our NHS and NJHS students have adopted a section of the roadway. They dedicate time to go out and keep the area free of the trash.
-
Community Garden: Thanks to the help of several members of our parish and school community we are able to raise our own vegetables. We also donate a portion of these to Open Door.
-
First Grade: Celebrated at the public library. Sitting on the lawn under one of the big trees, they read the story: The Tree That Would Not Die and talked about all of the ways trees help us. We made tree bark rubbings and then circled around a tree to give thanks for trees and all living things.

Senior Celebrations
Jose Angel
Jose will pursue his degree in criminal justice at State Fair Community College. He has future career plans to become a police officer and from there, a detective. Jose says that ever since he was little, he has been fascinated by police officers and has great respect for what they do. Upon graduation from SFCC’s criminal justice program, Jose will attend the police academy to complete his training. Beyond that, he is open to starting his career anywhere but would prefer to remain close to home.

Blood Drive – Wednesday, May 5
Mrs. Hagebusch and her students are working on our last contacts for their May 5th Blood Drive!
Currently, our area is experiencing a shortage of blood needed by local hospitals. We are about 30 donors short of making our goal of 80. By checking in on the BEAT, we hope to be able to meet that goal!

Contact: bhagebusch@gogremlins.com
*Please note: Entering through the north side of the building helps us keep down the number of folks passing through our school during the day.
Thank you for your past donation and we hope to see you on May 5th! The T-shirts have a cool NASA design on them.
