High School Dress Code

SCHOOL DRESS POLICY / DRESS CODE

GENERAL PHILOSOPHY

The Sacred Heart High School dress code is based on two primary ideas.  The first is that school is not a recreational or primarily social activity, and clothing worn to school should reflect that.  Second, what students wear and how they look is a reflection of the pride they take in their school and in themselves.

We want our children to look like they have come to work and achieve.  If we are going to adequately prepare young people to succeed in the world we must prepare them to be able to follow rules and be able to live up to high expectations.  When people enter our building we want them to notice a distinct difference and to know that they are in a Catholic school.  It is important that people think well of Sacred Heart and first impressions count.  Consequently, with all of this in mind we believe these expectations to be reasonable and expect full cooperation on the part of the student body.

Thoughts for Students:

First of all, a dress code is necessary because society today places very lax standards on modesty and decency.  As a Catholic Christian school we must set and hold a higher standard.

Second, most of you will find yourselves in the white-collar world one day.  That is what this educational experience is designed to train you for.  Without question, the way you dress matters.  In fact, it speaks volumes about the pride you take in yourself and your school or company.

Third, this educational process is not designed as a social or recreational endeavor.  The manner in which we dress should be a reflection of the importance we place on what is going on in this building on a daily basis.

Finally, if you can not discipline yourself to follow moderate dress code guidelines it certainly raises concern about your overall level of self-discipline and readiness to get out into the world on your own.

CURRENT DRESS CODE

General Regulations

1. No dress code can possibly address all eventualities. In questionable circumstances, the administration will ultimately decide what is acceptable and what is not.

2. All clothing is to fit properly and be neat and clean at all times.

3. A full list of consequences for those refusing to cooperate with school dress code regulations is included at the end of this policy.

Regulations for Students in Grades 9 through 12

Boys:

Shirts

1. Shirts must have sleeves.

2. Shirts may be collared or crew neck in style.

3. They shall be tucked in and appropriately buttoned or zipped (when applicable) at all times. (A plain white undershirt would not be acceptable.)

4. All shirts are to be a solid color or simple pattern and can possess no writing or pictures other than pocket-size logos on the shirt or Sacred Heart School logo of any size. (No more than 2 logos are acceptable - Pocket size is defined as no larger than 4" by 4")

5. Any logo that promotes, refers to, or implies drug, alcohol, or tobacco use, or is in any way rude or sexually suggestive will NOT be allowed.

6. Sweaters or sweatshirts may be worn untucked.  Fleece sweaters and sweatshirts along with wind suit style lightweight jackets and SHHS letter jackets are acceptable.  Otherwise, if there a question about whether or not a garment is, or is not, a sweater/sweatshirt, it is inappropriate; example, heavy or flannel shirts are shirts and will NOT be considered sweaters or sweatshirts.
