Alumni Happenings
1954 - Barbara (Lamey '54) Cooney receive the Missouri Arts Council 2011 arts philanthropy award on Feb. 16, 2011 at the state Capital in Jefferson City. Barbara is married to Jim Cooney and lives in Sedalia.
1988 - Jamie Melchert ('88), is commanding officer of the Missouri Army National Guard's 1138th Transportation Company, a St. Louis-based medium truck unit. They were deployed in April 2011 for a dangerous, year-long mission of convoy operations after receiving intensive training at military bases in both Missouri and Kansas. The 1138th will be delivering supplies and providing convoy security to coalition forces throughout Afghanistan. Capt. Melchert enlisted in the National Guard at the age of 28, after working as a newspaper reporter in Sedalia, Columbia, Moberly and Macon. In addition to his duties as commander of the 1138th, Capt. Melchert also works full-time as a federal technician for the state maintenance office in Jefferson City and is studying for a master's degree in business administration at Columbia College.
1992 - Will Kraus ('92) is the newly elected State Senator for Jackson County. He and his wife, Carmen, have two sons Taylor, 18 and Tannor, 13.
1999 - Ensign Nicholas M. Ackerman ('99) graduated from Officer Training command in Newport, R.I., on Dec. 3, 2010, as a surface warfare officer. He will be stationed at Naval Station Norfolk aboard the USS Mesa Verde LPD-19 in Norfolk, VA.
He is the son of Mike and Charlie (Huhman '74) Ackerman, of Sedalia.
2007 - Jacob Klein Dey ('07) graduated May 14, 2011 from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor of science degree in biological sciences and a minor in psychological sciences. While maintaining a 4.0 GPA, he earned the following awards and honors: Summa Cum Laude, University Honors (Departmental Honors and Honors College Certificate), Phi Beta Kapp Cords, Phi Kappa Phi Cords, Departmental Honors in Biological Sciences Cords, and the University Honors Medal. He also was one of nine seniors recognized as a Biological Sciences Student of the year the Year. He will be attending The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md., in the fall. He is the son of Tom ('76) and Charity (Klein '77) Dey and the grandson of Dorothy Dey and Doris Klein, both of Sedalia.
2007 - Sabrina Hopper ('07) was awarded the "Walk the Talk" Exemplary Leadership Award during the University of Central Missouri's Harmon College of Business Administration awards reception. She is the daughter of Greg and Glenda Hopper of Sedalia and is a senior at UCM majoring in business management.
2008 - Jason Marcum ('08) graduated summa cum laude from DeVry Universty on June 25, 2011. He received a bachelor of science degree in computer information systems, with an emphasis in information security. He is pursuing a master's degree in computer information systems and security at DeVry's Keller School of Business Management. Jason is the son of Jim and the late Dana Marcum.
Hoskins visits sons at war memorial
Bob Hoskins was recently escorted on the Show Me Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., by his son-in-law Cmdr. Larry Ward, husband of Margaret (Hoskins) Ward ('84). Hoskins has two sons and two son-in-laws who have served in the armed forces.
His son Brian ('75) lives near Washington, D. C., and his son Kelly ('82) lives in Omaha, Neb. He flew out to surprise his father. They met up with him at the Arlington Memorial.
